Fluid build-up in the feet, ankles or legs is called peripheral edema. It does not cause pain, and you notice it the fastest after taking your socks off. Then, characteristic lines appear on our feet or in the ankles.
Peripheral edema often occurs in pregnant women, the elderly, people who are overweight or have a tendency to accumulate water in the body. Swelling is also promoted by high temperatures, long hours of standing, immobilization and taking certain hormones, antidepressants, drugs for hypertension, steroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

What are the symptoms of heart disease? Look at the cubes
Heart disease is often not obvious. We usually associate them with fatigue, chest pain, irregular heartbeat and shortness of breath. However, symptoms of heart failure are also swelling, which in turn is a consequence of water retention in the body.
— This means that the heart is weakened and cannot pump blood as efficiently as it should. As a result, fluid can build up, and one of the first places where this happens is when your cubes are — explains Dr. Sarah Jarvis, family doctor and clinical director of Patientaccess.com, quoted by The Sun.
Dyspnea when exercising and feeling out of breath when lying flat are also related to fluid build-up in our body. Then, however, we are dealing with fluid accumulated in our lungs, explains Dr. Jarvis. This is a symptom of advanced heart failure.
