What is proteus mirabilis? What is the treatment? Is antibiotic therapy necessary? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.
How are proteus mirabilis infections treated?
Good morning, for several days I have been struggling with terrible pain in the lower abdomen area, pain and burning sensation when urinating. In addition, I have to go to the toilet very often because I have a terrible pressure on my bladder, but I only pee a few drops of urine. The GP referred me for a urine test with an antibiogram. I would like to add that the urine I put into the container was quite cloudy, there was probably some mucus in it and it had an unpleasant smell.
Today I picked up the results. It says it is proteus mirabilis in the urine. From what I have read on the internet, proteus mirabilis causes cystitis. Today I did not see a doctor, so I am asking for advice. What it looks like treatment of proteus mirabilis? Can I have any other undesirable symptoms of proteus mirabilis? Is antibiotic necessary for proteus mirabilis?
Can the treatment be based only on some home remedies (sitz baths, warm compresses, using cranberries)? Could a late cured proteus mirabilis have any consequences? Why can I go to the pharmacy to ease this pissing pain? I am asking for advice.
The doctor explains what the treatment of proteus mirabilis looks like
Madam, the symptoms mentioned by you are very suggestive urinary tract infection. Dysuria symptoms such as burning of the urethra, frequent urination and pain while urinating are very characteristic of this type of infection. In the event of cystitis, haematuria may additionally occur.
The procedure of the family doctor was appropriate, ordering a urine culture along with an antibiogram. It is a pity that you did not provide more information about the results, and in particular to which antibiotics the bacterium is sensitive. Such information is very important for the doctor to initiate the appropriate treatment.
Treatment of infections caused by Proteus mirabillis is to use antibiotics according to the antibiotic schedule. In addition, adequate, abundant irrigation is very important. A home remedy that brings relief is eating cranberries or cranberry products. Warm compresses applied to the lower abdomen may provide temporary pain relief, but will not cure the infection. Commonly available anti-inflammatory or analgesic drugs, such as ibuprofen or paracetamol, can also be used to relieve pain.
It is very important to start antibacterial treatment as soon as possible (especially in people with a weakened immune system), because untreated infections of the lower urinary tract can also spread to the kidneys, leading to acute pyelonephritis, which is characterized by severe pain and fever. In other cases, a chronic urinary tract infection can initiate the development of urosepsis, which is a life-threatening condition.
If you are unable to get to your primary care physician, you can take the results to the Night and Christmas Patient Care, where the doctor on duty, based on an antibiogram, will issue you with a prescription for an antibiotic. However, please remember that in urgent cases your GP should see you.
