What is the SIRT diet?

The SIRT diet is one of the most fashionable methods of losing weight. Recently, it became especially loud about her after the singer Adele confessed that thanks to her she managed to lose over 40 kg. What is the secret of this nutrition plan? What are the principles of the SIRT diet?

The SIRT diet – what is it?

The SIRT diet was developed by Aidan Goggins and Glen Matten – scientists from the University of Surrey in England. In 2016, this diet was described in the book “The SirtFood Diet”. The SIRT diet combines caloric restriction with the consumption of special green cocktails that are rich in sirtuin activators.

The most important in the SIRT diet are the products that should be included in the daily menu, not those that need to be eliminated. At the first stage, we should only exclude processed and unhealthy products (e.g. fast food, instant) and those made of white flour.

Compared to other diets, these are not big restrictions at the beginning of using the SIRT diet you can lose up to three kilograms a week! In the first two steps, the diet is designed to significantly reduce calories, but this only lasts for a few days.

SIRT diet – stages

Goggins and Matten, the authors of the SIRT diet, break its introduction into four steps.

PHASE I

Stage I

  1. Duration: 1st – 3rd day
  2. Calorific value: 1000 kcal
  3. What we eat: 3 sirtuin cocktails + 1 sirtuin meal

Stage II

  1. Duration: 4st – 7rd day
  2. Calorific value: 1500 kcal
  3. What we eat: 2 sirtuin cocktails + 2 sirtuin meals

PHASE II

Stage III

  1. Duration: 8st – 14rd day
  2. Caloric content: no specific caloric restrictions
  3. What we eat: preferably 3 main meals, 1-2 snacks + 1 sirtuin cocktail

Stage IV

  1. Duration: from the 15th day
  2. Caloric content: no specific caloric restrictions
  3. What we eat: no strict recommendations, it is important to eat sirtuin products and drink green smoothies

As you can see, the biggest challenge is the first three days when caloric intake is limited to 1000 kcal and the daily menu consists of three servings of a green sirtuin shake and one solid meal.

From day 4 to day 7, the energy value of meals should be increased to 1500 kcal, and during the day, drink two cocktails and eat two solid dishes based on sirtuin products.

There are no specific caloric restrictions on days 8 to 14, but your menu must include at least one cocktail and three meals based on sirtuin products.

From the 15th day on, make sure you have as much sirtfood in your diet as possible – try to eat three sirtuin meals and one or two snacks.

The sirt diet – through the eye of a dietitian

How do we dietitians evaluate this diet? Due to the number of meals per day and their low caloric content (especially in the first stage of the diet), such weight loss as promised by the creators of the SIRT diet is possible.

Energy reduction by 30-50% However, CPM (total metabolism) is quite drastic, so this diet cannot be used by everyone. Such a low energy supply forces the body to use its accumulated stores, which, according to the SIRT theory, can activate the thinness and youth gene (but there are not enough human studies to confirm the effect of sirtuins on body weight and draw reliable conclusions).

Losing three kilos in a week is primarily the result of reducing the caloric content of meals, and your well-being and better appearance in the long run come from meals rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Eating low-calorie meals, even for only 1-2 weeks, causes a feeling of hunger, irritability, fatigue and – despite the assurances of the authors of the SIRT diet – also the loss of muscle mass (with poorly selected proportions of macronutrients in the diet). These are not good results and no one is able to function on such an energy-poor diet for a long time. Another negative effect of such nutrition is hunger pangs and, consequently, the yo-yo effect.

That is why we say to drastic energy cuts – no! However, other assumptions of the SIRT diet are highly recommended, therefore in the book “Eat and lose weight with the SIRT diet” we will encourage you to introduce them in a slightly modified, milder version.

The sirt diet – how sirtuins work

So far, it has been established that individual sirtuins:

  1. slow down the aging processes (at the cellular level)
  2. they deactivate free radicals, which are the main cause of many diseases: cancer, cardiovascular diseases and skin diseases
  3. take part in the repair processes of damaged genetic material
  4. have a positive effect on metabolism
  5. accelerate fat burning
  6. regulate the level of glucose and insulin in the body
  7. have a positive effect on the activity of thyroid hormones

The SIRT diet is not only a slimming diet, but above all a diet that is worth using throughout your life.
