What is the role of an aromatherapist?
The search for an alternative to conventional medicine explains the growing use of so-called “soft” medicines. In this context, aromatherapy consists of treating yourself with essential oils. Delicate to handle, they require a certain expertise, which explains the emergence of aromatherapists, professionals specializing in the use of essential oils.

What is the expertise of an aromatherapist?

The aromatherapist differs from the phytotherapist insofar as he specializes in the use of essential oils extracted from plants, and not all the elements of plants. It masters the properties and specificities of essential oils on health. A novice may indeed not find his way among the different varieties of essential oil of lavender (fine, true, aspic) or eucalyptus (radiata, globulus). The aromatherapy specialist guides clients precisely to the essential oils and synergies best suited to their health problems. In addition, he has a good knowledge in biochemistry and on the human body. Unlike the aromatologist, the aromatherapist does not provide advice in the fields of well-being or beauty, but helps relieve everyday ailments: stress, headaches, fatigue, skin problems, joint pain. or muscle, digestion …

He teaches his clients how to use essential oils safely and to dilute them in suitable vegetable oils. Essential oils are indeed very concentrated and can have powerful effects in small doses. Some, like the essential oils of oregano, cistus or savory, can even become toxic if used in too much. The mode of use is also important because all essential oils can not be used in the same way: some are not recommended for diffusion while others are topically, for example.

In practice, we must distinguish between an aromatherapy advisor and an aromatherapist doctor: the former can only provide advice in aromatherapy while the latter has the right to treat with essential oils.
