Preliminary research by South African scientists suggests that the Omikron variant poses a threefold higher risk of coronavirus recurrence. People who have previously had COVID-19 are therefore not protected against reinfection. There are also reports that vaccines should still protect against the severe course of COVID-19 and hospitalization.

New research on the risk of reinfection with the Omikron variant
South African experts report that Omikron poses a three times higher risk of reinfection than previous coronavirus strains. The preliminary research published on Thursday has yet to be verified and is still awaiting a scientific review.
Analyzes show that recently recorded reinfections occurred in people who contracted COVID-19 for the first time in all three waves of the pandemic. Most often, however, re-infection concerned people infected with the coronavirus for the first time in the period dominated by the Delta variant. This means that having COVID-19 after infection with any of the previous strains of the virus does not provide protection against infection with the Omikron variant.
Investigators did not have access to information on patients’ vaccination status. Consequently, they were not able to judge to what extent Omikron is able to cope with vaccine immunity.

In mid-November, around 300 new coronavirus infections were detected daily in South Africa. On Monday, 2 273 new infections, there were 4 on Tuesday. 373, and on Wednesday – 8 thousand. 561. As reported by Anne von Gottberg, an expert from the National Institute of Infectious Diseases of South Africa, an exponential increase in the number of infections is possible in all provinces of the country. This trend may also be true for the global population. However, specialists believe that vaccines should protect patients against the severe course of the disease.

Omikron: vaccines reduce the risk of hospitalization and death?
According to scientists from South Africa, people vaccinated with COVID-19 should be less at risk of a severe course of infection with the Omikron variant. It is also associated with a lower likelihood of hospitalization and death as a result of the disease.
Based on cases detected so far Omikron is also suspected to cause milder symptoms than previous coronavirus variants. However, it should be taken into account that the data may be distorted due to the fact that so far the new variant has been detected mainly in young and healthy people.
There is still no more detailed research on the Omicron, and the pool of reliable information remains limited. Analyzes on the effectiveness of vaccinations against the new variant are expected to appear in the coming days.
