In order not to spoil the delicious aroma and taste, true connoisseurs taste the drink of pirates and sailors in its purest form. In this case, an appetizer is also not provided – it is better to smoke an expensive cigar, and then “polish” the blend with bitter coffee. However, not everyone can drink 40-70-degree alcohol in its pure form, so novice tasters or gentle ladies are advised to dilute rum, but not with anything, but with soft drinks specially designed for this. Sometimes it makes sense to choose the right snack.
How to dilute rum:
1. Water – most often in the form of ice cubes, but you can also use mineral water without gas. The proportions depend on personal preference, but no more than 2 parts of water to 1 part of rum.
2. Freshly squeezed juices – preferably tropical, such as pineapple or coconut. Connoisseurs advise taking half as much juice as rum, but this is not a strict recommendation.
The famous Mojito cocktail is made on the basis of rum: mint leaves, lime, sugar, ice, sparkling water and fruit juice are added to alcohol to taste. The combination of light rum with syrup and lime juice is called “Daiquiri” and is also among the most popular cocktails.
3. Soda water (i.e. regular sparkling water) – goes well with inexpensive white rum.
Some bars offer ginger soda instead of plain soda, so-called “ginger beer” (despite the name, it’s a non-alcoholic drink).
4. Coca-Cola – a frequent combination at student parties, when the quality of alcohol leaves much to be desired, and an unpleasant aftertaste must be masked with sweet soda. Suitable only for inexpensive rum, if the taste is not important, but there is a desire to just get drunk to a certain condition.
The darker the rum, the longer the aging (if there are no dyes in the composition), the higher the price and the more refined the taste. It is considered sacrilege to dilute aged dark rum; inexpensive white varieties are taken for cocktails.
5. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate – 50 ml of rum per mug is enough. You can also add cinnamon, cane sugar, nutmeg, cloves to a cup of warmed rum, slightly dilute with hot water (or milk!) And get a good alternative to mulled wine.
In Scotland, they make a “hot toddy” drink: an ounce (about 30 ml) of gold or dark rum, spices to taste, a tablespoon of honey, a quarter of a lemon and a mug of hot water are required. If desired, it is not forbidden to add brown sugar for sweetness.
What do they eat rum
Like any strong liquor, rum goes well with meat dishes. The right appetizer for rum should not be too spicy or spicy, so as not to drown out the taste of the drink itself, so regular brown bread is considered the best option, which is eaten to give the taste buds a rest, and then savor the aromatic alcohol again. Also, the list of classic gastronomic pairs includes cheeses, seafood, bitter chocolate, truffle sweets.
The appetizer largely depends on the aging of the drink:
- Light rum is eaten with pieces of fresh coconut, almonds, grilled fruits.
- Dark rum is served with fragrant and juicy fruits, citruses, cold-smoked salmon or weak salt, and brown rice are well suited.
- Aged varieties can be eaten with chicken wings, goat cheese and other dishes with a pronounced taste.
