My good friend, with whom I have been friends for a very long time, is a lady with magnificent forms. But I have never met a more cheerful person than she. Her favorite saying: “It’s not the calories in a glass (or glass) that make you fat, but what you eat.”
I took her words on faith, without much thought. Until I decided to conduct a personal study, how things really are. And today I want to share the results with you.
Is alcohol really a high-calorie product and why
Any nutritionist will say that for those who want to get rid of extra pounds, alcoholic beverages are the strictest taboo. They contain only “unnecessary” calories to the body, and in large quantities. But there is also alcohol, which, in comparison with other options, can be considered low-calorie.
The fact that alcohol is noticeably more caloric than many drinks is a proven fact. High-calorie snacks also speed up the process of gaining extra pounds. Moreover, the body is not able to convert the calories that come at an “accelerated pace” into energy or something else useful. They are, from his point of view, completely “empty”.
All this can be explained by banal physiology. By slowing down your metabolism, alcohol slows down the process of burning fat. Because of this, a certain percentage of alcohol taken orally becomes fat itself, gradually turning into acetate in the digestive system.
It, in turn, is absorbed into the bloodstream, replacing the fat that the body originally “planned” to spend today, providing itself with the necessary nutrition.
It is not able to completely use up this acetate, “enriched” with toxins and alcohol decay products. Therefore, its excess becomes fat again. As a result, it turns out that the body not only did not use up the planned “reserve”, but also received additional fat cells.
Important! The calorie content of alcohol is 7 kcal / ml, fat – 9 kcal / ml. The difference is not so great. And if you consider that alcohol interferes with an adequate assessment of the feeling of fullness and measure, then during the feast you can, “without noticing”, consume up to 4000-5000 kcal.
The lowest calorie strong drinks
“Low-calorie strong alcohol” is practically an oxymoron. The higher the degree, the more alcohol. Accordingly, the calorie content also increases.
In brandy, vodka, whiskey, cognac, gin, rum, it differs slightly, varying between 225-250 kcal. Tequila stands out slightly for the better – only 210 kcal.
Important! For those who want to lose weight, it is better to dilute strong drinks with soda. Or throw more ice into the glass.
Tequila is slightly less caloric than other spirits, but it cannot be called diet alcohol.
Lowest calorie soft drinks
With low-alcohol drinks, not everything is so bad. On a special occasion and in small volumes, dieters can afford:
- Light lager (60 kcal). The only problem is that usually much more than 100 ml of beer is drunk. Accordingly, the calorie content also increases.
- Dry and semi-dry wine (68-70 and 80-90 kcal). It favorably differs from semi-sweet in a lower sugar content, and from beer in that many people really manage to limit themselves to one to one and a half glasses. The difference in calories between white and red dry wine is insignificant.
- Brut and semi-sweet champagne (55 and 80-85 kcal). One glass for the body is not critical, but keep in mind that the bubbles are not very useful for digestion. As a result, the diet also suffers.
A glass of dry champagne on a special occasion can be afforded, even on a diet.
The lowest calorie cocktails
For those who prefer cocktails, ingredients such as sugar and syrup are banned. Ice, on the other hand, is welcome. What can be ordered by slightly “modernizing” the classic recipe:
- Tequila with lime juice instead of Margarita (200 kcal versus 400).
- Vodka with soda and lemon instead of a pure drink (96 kcal versus 225). You need to dilute it with soda, not tonic. It contains sugar.
- “Mojito” without syrup, only with mint and lime (95 kcal versus 170).
- Light Bloody Mary. Instead of tomato juice, it is better to pour more tomato sauce, add spices. Replace olives with cherry tomatoes. Calorie content drops to 120 kcal from 400.
- Gin and soda, not tonic. For taste, you can add a sprig of rosemary. The calorie content of such a cocktail is 120 kcal, the classic one is about 250.
Soda water instead of tonic reduces the calorie content of a gin cocktail by almost half.
Alcohol, if you go overboard with it, is not only a severe hangover, but also extra pounds. Moreover, the body does not derive any benefit from the calories received.
Therefore, it is better for those who follow a strict diet to give up alcohol altogether, and for those who want to get rid of a few extra pounds, choose low-calorie drinks.
Excessive alcohol consumption is harmful to your health. Take care of yourself!
What do you think? Are diet and alcohol compatible? Can alcoholic beverages, which have fewer calories than others, really be called low-calorie?
