What does elevated MCHC mean? Does a high MCHC result indicate the causes of existing health problems? How does a high MCHC score affect how you feel? The question is answered by the drug. Anna Mitschke.
What does a high MCHC result indicate?
Hello, for some time I have felt a lot of weakness, sometimes I felt dizzy and generally felt unwell. At the beginning, the doctor sent me for tests and, among other things, ordered a blood count. I already have the results and it turns out I do elevated MCHCalthough other results are either normal or slightly out of bounds, only the MCHC is high. What is the evidence of an increased MCHC? Could this result be an indication of the cause of my previous health problems and help determine their cause?
I thought low vitamin D levels or stress were responsible for my malaise, but now the elevated MCHC made me very concerned. I’m only 25 years old and I haven’t done any thorough research before, so I don’t even know if high MCHC it appeared recently or had it before. I would ask for help in finding causes of elevated MCHC, or at least an indication of the potential reasons for such morphology findings. Is a high MCHC an indication for any additional tests I should do?
The doctor identifies possible causes of high MCHC
Blood morphology is a commonly performed diagnostic test. It allows the number of morphotic elements of blood to be determined and some of their features to be assessed. Blood morphology is performed from a small amount of blood, therefore usually there are no contraindications for the test. One of the parameters in morphology is MCHC – the mean concentration of hemoglobin in the blood cell. Normal values are within the range of 32-36 g / dL. Together with MCH indicator (average blood hemoglobin content) allows you to assess the amount of hemoglobin in red blood cells (erythrocytes). Hemoglobin is a very important protein that transports oxygen in the blood. MCH and MCHC parameters are rarely increased.
We observe the results above the norm, among others in the course of hereditary spherocytosis. It is a genetic disease that shows symptoms as early as childhood. Red blood cells (erythrocytes) have the wrong shape – spherical instead of normal disc. Symptoms include jaundice, liver enlargement, weakness. We observe a decrease in the MCH and MCHC indicators more often. The most common cause is iron deficiency anemia.
This element comes in composition of hemoglobinwhich, as I mentioned before, is responsible for the transport of oxygen in the blood. In case of iron deficiency, impaired absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, high demand, or with excessive loss of the element, anemia due to iron deficiency occurs. Depending on the severity of the disease, there are a number of symptoms. The symptoms of anemia include weakness, pale skin and mucous membranes, increased heart rate, headache.
Laboratory findings should be considered based on the clinical picture. Information about past diseases, current symptoms, and hereditary burdens is important. I propose to consult the test results with your family doctor. After reviewing the patient, the doctor will decide on further treatment. If necessary, he or she will order additional tests, refer you to a specialist and implement the necessary treatment.
