What is the EUS test? Does the examination resemble an ultrasound? How can you prepare for the EUS test? What should I know before taking the test? What is the course of the study? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.
What is EUS research?
Good day. My question relates to a test that a doctor recently recommended to me. I would like to ask specifically what it is EUS study? The study was commissioned because I have pancreatic problems, there is a suspicion of some nodules. I’m a bit worried about that, so I forgot to ask the doctor for details. First of all, I wonder what the EUS test is about? Is EUS examination similar to ultrasound? I have an appointment next week and I do not know how to prepare for the EUS test?
Are there any special things I should know about? For example fasting etc? Before many studies, there are such restrictions, and I don’t know if they apply to me too. I would also be grateful for describing what the EUS study looks like? What will be done during the visit and what it is the course of the EUS examination? I panic a bit, because I am afraid of doctors and visits, and here it is even difficult for me to ask someone, because none of my friends or family has had an EUS test and is unable to help me.
The doctor explains what the EUS test is about
EUS, from the English endoscopic ultrasound, i.e. endoscopic ultrasonography (??) is a minimally invasive procedure for a thorough examination of diseases of the upper gastrointestinal tract and lung diseases. During EUS, the doctor introduces a special endoscope with the possibility of ultrasound imaging through the oral cavity into the gastrointestinal tract. This allows you to get an accurate picture of the walls of the gastrointestinal tract and chest, as well as nearby organs, such as the pancreas and liver, lymph nodes. During EUS, the doctor may perform a fine-needle biopsy and refer it for histopathological examination.
This test is performed to diagnose the cause of symptoms such as chest pain, abdominal pain, to assess the severity of gastrointestinal and pulmonary disease, or to deepen the diagnosis of changes visible on CT or MRI. EUS can help diagnose diseases such as colon cancer, esophagus, lung, pancreas, stomach, rectum, Vatter’s warts *, lymphomas, Barrett’s esophagus, neuroendocrine tumors, pancreatitis and pancreatic cysts *, sarcoidosis, gallstones ???? * **. It can help evaluate pancreatic cysts and their drainage. It is also possible to deliver treatment directly to the organ in this way.
EUS is a safe procedure, possible complications of the test include bleeding, infection, perforation of the gastrointestinal wall or throat, inflammation of the pancreas (if a fine needle biopsy is performed). If you experience fever, chest pain, shortness of breath, tarry stools, severe abdominal pain after the procedure – you should immediately go to the nearest emergency room.
You should prepare for the EUS test: do not eat at least 6 hours before the test, or eat it at 18.00 p.m. on the day before the test. You should follow the recommendations regarding medications that should be taken or discontinued on the day of the examination – this should be explained by the doctor ordering the examination. It is also advisable to inform someone that a family member or friend should collect the patient from the hospital – this is usually a one-day stay, which means that admission and discharge from the hospital are made on the same day.
