Carbonated and other sweetened drinks – one of the causes of obesity – are the source of approx. 6 percent of calories consumed by adults. «Our focus so far has been on drinks sweetened with sugar. Calories in alcohol are something new »says Cynthia Ogden, one of the authors of the study, an epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Scientists say these findings are noteworthy because alcohol, like soda, is low in nutrients and can therefore be a lot of calories.
