What is the “curly” hair washing method

Everyone talks about the “curly” method of washing hair, and not only the owners of curls are interested in it, but also those whose hair is curly only a little or not at all. Is the hype around this mysterious method justified? Oh yeah! Let me make sure.

“Curly” method of washing hair (Curly Girl Method) – what is it?

The “curly” hair washing method is one of the main points of the Curly Girl Method (CGM), a special care system for curly, curly and wavy hair. The Curly Girl Method (or the “curly” method, as we began to call it for short) was developed by hairdresser Lauren Messi, who took on the mission to teach curly girls to respect their hair, stop fighting with their nature, but on the contrary, give them the opportunity twist in all its glory.

The fact is that wavy and curly hair is special. Due to their structure, they suffer from dryness, porosity, are often hard, easily confused, and react sharply to the external environment (whether it be high humidity or dry air).

Therefore, ideally luxurious curls or elastic curls can look like a shapeless mass, which, of course, cannot but depress the girls. Not knowing how to deal with it, they grab irons and brushes, causing tangible and noticeable damage to the hair. Fortunately fixable.

Curly Girl Method implies a set of rules regarding the selection of hair care products, washing techniques and styling methods. These rules have already been followed by thousands of girls around the world, returning their natural beauty to their hair. Since each curly head is unique, there are many ways to apply products, style and dry.

All this is very exciting.

Advantages and features of the method

The “curly” method of hair care involves, first of all, legibility and a scrupulous approach to the choice of products: usually adherents of this method use mild formulas of cleansers, prefer natural ingredients.

The main enemy of curls is dryness, so the curly method eliminates everything that can aggravate or provoke it.

Fundamental rules

First of all, we list the main taboos of the “curly” method.

  1. Shampoos with sulfates. It is believed that SLS degreases the scalp and dries the hair, which is detrimental to curls.

  2. Products with silicones. It is believed in the curly hair community that silicones form a film on the hair and can lead to dryness if used continuously. In addition, they are poorly washed off with sulfate-free shampoos, which goes against rule number one.

  3. Alcohol in styling products. He dries his hair.

  4. A fan. PUnder the influence of high temperatures, moisture is evaporated from the hair, the curls lose their shape and turn into a dry, uncontrollable mass.

  5. Combing dry hair. Curls are very difficult to comb dry without damaging the hair: the comb gets stuck in the hair, the hair breaks, breaks. Wet strands, generously covered with conditioner or leave-in care products, untangle easily. It is better to do this with your fingers, detengler, in extreme cases, a comb with sparsely planted teeth.

  6. Frequent shampooing. It is believed that curly hair simply does not need it. Abuse of cleansing provokes even greater dryness.

  7. Rub, twist hair, wring out like underwear. The “curly” method of drying hair does not accept such rudeness.

  8. Use of a regular towel. Use only microfiber or cotton options. By the way, an ordinary soft T-shirt is also suitable for primary drying and blotting of wet strands. Checked!

Wavy hair is easier to comb than curly hair

Washing your hair with the “curly” method is not only about prohibitions. We tell you what to use and how.

  1. It is recommended to use the conditioner, balm-rinse abundantly with each shampooing.

  2. Use a special balm instead of shampoo while washing your hair (the so-called co-washing, washing conditioner), and shampoo once a month. In stock, you need to have a cleansing (at least sulfate-free) shampoo that can remove impurities from the scalp.

  3. Use masks once or twice a week: moisturizing with oils and hydrators if the hair is just dry and fluffy, and protein if it is damaged and porous. You can alternate different masks depending on the condition of the curls.

  4. Apply styling products only to damp or even wet hair (everyone decides for himself).

  5. Curls form only on wet hair. After styling, the hair is not touched until it is 80% dry, and preferably one hundred percent.

  6. In the evening, the curls are taken into a high ponytail so that they do not get disheveled during sleep. In the morning, it is enough to “activate” them with water, so almost every curly girl has a spray bottle.

  7. It is worth changing ordinary pillowcases for smooth silk or satin – so the hair will be less fluffy and tangled.

Who will suit

The “curly” method was invented for hair of varying degrees of wavy (curly, curly, just wavy), but even straight hair can benefit from it, especially when it comes to shampooing. If the strands are badly damaged, suffer from dryness, are dyed, permed, they lack shine and smoothness, then legibility in the choice of products, thoughtful and careful care will be more than appropriate.

“Curly” method of washing your hair at home: step by step instructions

It’s time to break down the “curly” method of shampooing and styling your hair step by step – here is a very detailed instruction.

the washing up

  1. Wet the head properly with warm water (not hot!), take a small amount of shampoo, distribute / lather in the palms and apply to the entire surface of the scalp. Shampoo is not applied along the length of the hair. Massage the head with your fingertips for 2-3 minutes. Rinse thoroughly.

  2. We apply the conditioner along the length of the hair in a row, from top to bottom, to the very ends, so that the composition completely covers each hair. At the same time, we comb the strands and untangle them with our fingers. If you can’t manage without a comb (detengler, silicone brush), use it now, starting from the ends of the hair.

  3. We grab the strand from below with the palm of our hand and bring it to the head, making squeezing movements with our fingers several times – it is believed that these manipulations help to form a curl and contribute to a more intense effect of the product.

  4. We tilt our heads and throw the strands forward. In the upside down position, wash off the composition with cool water.

  5. Apply leave-in conditioner. Here you need to experiment: some apply indelible care to completely wet hair, others prefer to pre-wet the tips slightly with a towel – always made of microfiber or soft cotton. We distribute the product through the hair with combing movements. Fingers should slide freely between the curls. If this does not happen, you need to add a little water. In this case, it is convenient to use a spray. Having distributed the product, we again pick up the strands, and direct them to the roots, forming curls. This technique is called “scrunch”.

Stacking

  1. We remain in the position upside down and apply the styler – cream (for curly, coarse hair) or gel (for thin wavy), universal foam.

  2. After carefully distributing the product, repeat the “scrunch” method many times again until a clear curl is formed.

  3. We straighten up, throw the whole mass of hair on one side, tilting our head slightly to the side, and repeat the process.

  4. We do the same on the other side.

  5. And finally, we recline the hair back and apply the styler to the back of the head and below. Scrunch-scrunch-scrunch.

Drying

The curls are ready, now you need to dry them so that they retain their shape and do not unravel.

  1. Carefully pick up the curls with a towel (as we said, old T-shirts do a great job with this role) to remove excess moisture. It’s important not to overdo it.

  2. We dry the hair naturally, that is, without using any devices and do not touch them until they dry.

  3. The second way is to use a hair dryer with a diffuser on a cool or lukewarm setting. We dry by sectors: we immerse the strands in the diffuser (carefully so as not to injure the curl) and apply it to the head.

  4. Toward the end of the process, when the head is already surrounded by confident curls, you can apply a little more gel by mixing it with water. But this is optional.

  5. When the hair is 80% dry, you can stop, let it air dry.

  6. And finally, if you used a gel, you need to give the curls plasticity (break the so-called “cast”) with the help of the ubiquitous scrunch.

The curly-haired girl method eliminates hot hair dryers.

Note that the styling process takes less time for owners of elastic, well-defined curls. If the hair is wavy and does not hold a curl well, you will have to make more effort. If you style your hair skillfully and use the product that suits you, the result will last until the next shampoo, that is, at least three days. Truth, every morning you will need to “activate” the curls with water.

Is the “curly” method of care for straight hair

In general, the “curly” method of shampooing is suitable for straight hair. With it, you can make useful adjustments to your home care.

If you have color-treated or dry hair in need of hydration and nourishment, then CGM-approved staples (sulfate-free shampoos, moisturizing and softening conditioners, and masks with oils and proteins) are more than appropriate.

But there are a few things that need not borrow from curly girls.

  1. Comb your hair when it is wet.

For curly girls, this is a necessary measure. If you have straight and thin hair, combing it when wet will not do them any good. Why you should not do this is written here.

  2. Replace shampooing with co-washing for oily scalp.

If the head needs frequent washing, it is not necessary to use a balm instead of shampoo, as it will not be able to effectively remove accumulated dirt.

  3. Wash your hair rarely.

The head should be washed as it gets dirty, at least every day. It doesn’t matter what the adherents of the Curly Girl Method say about this.

Find out how often you need to wash your hair right now.

And now, we tell you step by step how to apply the “curly” method for straight hair, long and short.

  1. Wash your hair with a sulfate-free shampoo.

  2. Apply a generous amount of conditioner (or mask), leave for a few minutes.

  3. Wash off with plenty of water.

  4. Wrap your head in a microfiber or cotton towel.

  5. Wait until the fabric absorbs moisture (15-20 minutes).

  6. Apply leave-in treatment to damp hair (optional).

  7. Dry naturally or with a cool hair dryer.
