For what reason does a stork pinch appear? Can a stork sign be somehow dangerous for a child? Does such a birthmark disappear with age? Is it possible that the stork’s pinch will disappear by itself? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.
What are the reasons for the appearance of a stork pinch?
Hello and welcome. My question concerns my granddaughter who was born a few weeks ago and concerns the birthmark on her neck. From birth, Wnusia has a triangular, red birthmark on the neck. We found out that it is the so-called stork sign, but I do not know if it is something dangerous, and the child’s parents completely underestimate the problem. However, I think that you need to find out where the stork sign comes from. Therefore, I would like to ask you to explain what is the cause of a stork pinching?
Is that pinching the stork is it dangerous in some way? And the most important thing, maybe not very important for some, but will the stork sign disappear? Is there any chance that the stork’s pinch will disappear from the skin in some independent way? I wish she wouldn’t have to deal with such a birthmark, especially since she is a girl. However, will the stork’s pinch be removed somehow? Are there any proven ways to remove stork pinch in babies? Is it possible to remove the stork’s mark only in older children? Thank you in advance for your answer and best regards
The doctor explains the reasons for pinching the stork
A pinch of a stork, that is flat vascular nevusis a congenital vascular malformation present in newborns and infants. It is quite common because, depending on the source, it occurs in 22-40% of newborns, and according to other sources, even in 40-70% of newborns! These are dilated capillaries in the skin that can darken when the baby cries or when the temperature changes. The skin, in addition to its appearance, does not differ from skin without birthmark, for example, the touch is indistinguishable.
Most often it affects the nape of the neck, but can also occur on the forehead, eyelids and upper lip. A birthmark usually appears in the first months of life or is present at birth. It usually resolves spontaneously by the age of three and treatment is rarely required. If the birthmark persists despite the child reaching the age of three, you should discuss with your doctor whether such a birthmark is removed using laser techniques or by the method of freezing the nevus with liquid nitrogen or surgical excision of the lesion.
A flat vascular nevus is not dangerous, nor is it a symptom of another disease (not to be confused with port wine nevi, which may be a symptom of genetic syndromes). It is quite common in the general population, most often in the white population.
For now, “stork pinching” does not require surgical treatment, but if the birthmark does not disappear in the future and requires treatment, it is best to contact the doctor who will choose the best method for the patient. However, if there are other disturbing symptoms in the child, contact the Pediatrician, who will independently conduct a medical history, physical examination and order additional tests, if the patient requires it.
