Before traveling with children to the sea, it is important to take care of sun protection in advance. We have collected information that will help you buy a safe and effective cream for babies up to a year and after.
Why is it important to protect children’s skin from the sun?
The skin of babies and children under 3 years of age is not as strong and perfect as that of adults. We have written about this more than once, but you can refresh your knowledge by reading these articles.
Children’s skin is very delicate and sensitive.
The benefits of the sun for children
It would be a mistake to say that the sun is bad for children’s skin. The advantages of ultraviolet are obvious. We list only a part of them.
Vitamin D is synthesized in the skin
It is essential for bone formation. But its usefulness is not limited to this. As recent scientific studies show, vitamin D is directly involved in strengthening the immune system.
Improves mood
The sun is one of the best antidepressants for both adults and kids. You probably noticed that during the rain, children often become whiny, naughty, and on sunny days they have a great mood.
The positive effect of sunbathing for a child is possible only under one condition – the baby’s skin must be reliably protected from ultraviolet rays.
What sunscreen to choose for a child
Look for sunscreens with the highest SPF 50/50+ for children.
Before you buy sunscreen for your baby, we advise you to pay attention to the following important points.
The packaging of the product should contain information about the presence of protective filters from UVB and UVA rays.
Sun filters are divided into physical (reflecting) and chemical (absorbing). Their combination is most effective for sun protection.
Recall that physical (mineral) filters include, for example, titanium dioxide. A product with mineral filters may leave a whitish coating. This is convenient for parents: you can immediately see where the child’s skin is treated with cream, and where it is not.
Chemical filters – a wide variety. Unlike physical ones, they do not leave visible marks on the skin. Many of them are waterproof, and some have the property of “anti-sand”, that is, they minimize the adhesion of sand.
After three years, melanin begins to be produced in babies, and until that time their skin is very delicate and sensitive. Especially – up to a year. This is due to differences in the composition of children’s sunscreens.
Sunscreen for babies and children up to a year
For the smallest, physical, reflective filters are often used. Please note that in sunny weather, the baby needs to provide shade.
Sunscreens for children from one to three years
This period is characterized by the beginning of physical activity. Children begin to walk, love to swim, so the cream must be resistant to water and sand. Always choose a remedy according to age. Follow the label.
Rating of the best sunscreens for children
Especially for young parents, as well as for everyone who is going to the sea with small children, the editors of Healthy-Food have compiled a list of products that will help protect delicate children’s skin from the sun.
Anthelios Dermo-Pediatrics Sunscreen Baby Milk, SPF 50+, La Roche-Posay
Milk is suitable even for the skin of babies. Thanks to the patented photostable solar filter system, it blocks UVB rays (SPF 50+) and provides really powerful UVA protection according to European guidelines. For additional skin care, the product contains shea butter and La Roche-Posay thermal water, rich in selenium.
Anthelios Dermo-Pediatrics Sun Spray for Children, SPF 50+, La Roche-Posay
The spray includes the Mexoplex filter system, which provides photostable protection against the negative effects of UVA / UVB rays. Ease of application is also a plus. Remember, however, that spray sunscreen must be sprayed on and then spread evenly over the skin, just like a cream or lotion.
Anthelios Dermo-Pediatrics sunscreen gel with application technology for wet skin for the face and body of children, SPF 50+, La Roche-Posay
The new baby product was created using the Vetskin technology, thanks to which the product retains its protective properties even when applied to wet skin. The non-staining, instantly absorbing gel creates a hydrophobic, water-repellent layer.
Sun milk for children Anthelios Dermo-Pediatrics, SPF 50+, La Roche-Posay
The La Roche-Posay thermal water formula is based on the Mexoplex solar filter system, which is designed for enhanced photostable protection against the negative effects of UVA/UVB rays.
General rules for sun exposure
Make sure that in the sun the child was in a Panama hat and, preferably, in sunglasses.
Children of all ages, and especially infants and children under three years of age, should avoid exposure to the sun for more than 10 minutes.
Always wear a panama hat or scarf over your child’s head.
Apply sunscreen to your child’s skin just before leaving the house, and don’t forget to reapply sunscreen after swimming in the sea or pool, and after towel drying.
