What is skin pH and why is it important?

Everyone knows that pH exists and that it can be unbalanced. But what is it all about – a question for backfilling. Now you will learn everything and will be able to evaluate your beauty arsenal in a new way.

What is pH

This strange abbreviation stands for rather strangely – the hydrogen indicator. Without going into details, let’s say what it means the acidity of the environment, or its acid-base balance. pH is measured on a scale from 0 to 14 (in the aquatic environment), where 7 is a neutral indicator.

  • Anything below 7 is acidic.

  • Anything above is alkaline.

This includes your skin, the pH of which must be observed.

The pH of the skin is one of the indicators of its health.

What is the importance of pH for the skin

The physiological role of the acidic environment on the surface of the skin is to protect against invading microorganisms.

Fashionable arguments about the harmful “acidification” of the body do not apply to the skin. For her, “sourness” is good.

pH level and cosmetics

Hydrolipid mantle – the main protection of the skin from infections, aggressive environmental factors and dehydration – in English is called the “acid mantle” (acid mantle). Everything we put on our skin should ideally match its acidity. When pH 5,5 is written on a jar of beauty products, this means that its contents will not damage the hydrolipid mantle.

The final stage of skin cleansing is very important – toning. Tonics restore the pH of the skin.

Negative effects on the pH of the skin have:

  • tap water;

  • soap;

  • some cosmetics;

  • sea water;

  • peelings.

Tap water negatively affects the pH of the skin.
