Sangria – This is a relatively low-alcohol soft drink (if you want – a kind of cocktail), prepared on the basis of very ordinary, but at the same time high-quality, mostly dry table wines. Homeland are Spain and Portugal. But the Italians also contributed to the creation of the drink, starting to add sparkling wines to it.
Composition of sangria
Textbook sangria is a blood-red color that got its reflection in the name of the drink (from Spanish this word is translated as “blood”), consists of dry red wine (ideally – rioja), spring water, cane sugar and slices of citrus fruits (usually , oranges and lemons).
In the future, thanks to the development of the idea of the drink and the growth of its popularity, the number of possible ingredients increased significantly.
So, along with red wine, both white and rosé wines can serve as the basis for today’s drink.
Instead of ordinary water, mineral water, carbonated drinks, fruit juices or sparkling wine can be used. In addition, as additional additives, strong alcohol is often used (brandy, whiskey, vodka, gin, rum, etc.), as well as various liqueurs (most often dry or cocktail).
The fruit list has expanded inexpressibly. In addition to the invariable citrus fruits, it includes fruits and berries of temperate latitudes, grapes, southern and tropical fruits, and even melons with watermelons. Finally, along with sugar, honey, vanilla, syrups, nutmeg, ginger, anise, cinnamon, cloves and fresh mint were added to the drink.
All this determined a somewhat conditional typology of this South European drink:
Quiet (regular) sangria – prepared on the basis of red wine using citrus fruits and grapes, but without the addition of sparkling or carbonated components
White sangria, the recipe of which involves the use of dry, semi-sweet or even sweet white wine instead of red table wine
Pink sangria – made with rosé wine
Sparkling sangria – a variation that involves the addition of sparkling wines a la Champagne or soft drinks to a red, white or rose base
fruit sangria (also goes under the playful name “wine okroshka”) – it is distinguished by a huge amount and an unregulated variety of fruits and berries contained in it
Strong sangria – got its name due to the preliminary six-hour soaking of fruits cut for it in high-grade alcohol or the direct addition of adult strong drinks
There is also non-alcoholic sangria., the recipe of which excludes the presence of any alcohol. It is a sliced fruit, filled with cola, lemonade, or just sparkling water, flavored, if desired, with sugar and spices
How many degrees in sangria
In the vast majority of cases, the strength of the drink we are interested in is from 4 to 9 degrees.
If we are talking about its strong variation, then it can reach 14-18 revolutions.
How to drink sangria
Prepare and serve sangria in a jug with crushed ice or in a capacious transparent bowl. Ideally, it is drunk from cork glasses, but this is not necessary.
There is an unwritten rule that glasses, glasses or mugs for a sparkling variety of a drink must be transparent.
When using a bowl, coolant is poured with a ladle.
If we are talking about a jug, then a special spoon with a long handle is attached to it, used to hold fruit. The only exception is “fruit okroshka”, poured along with its fruit and berry component.
Appetizer for sangria
If you got a strong variety of drink or just wanted to have a snack, we recommend choosing cheeses, fruits or, based on the nature of the wine base, low-fat meat or fish dishes.
How to make sangria
The process of preparing the drink itself is quite simple. But at the same time, it requires a high degree of creativity in the selection of ingredients. Again, there are a few unwritten rules here.
There are some differences in the preparation of fruits and berries:
Citrus fruits are cut into slices along with the peel.
Apples and pears are freed from the core and cut into slices.
Stone fruits (peaches, plums, etc.) are separated from these very stones and, depending on the size, cut into halves or quarters.
Large berries, like strawberries, are cut in half, small ones are placed whole.
When using melons, watermelons and tropical fruits, only medium-sized chopped pulp is used.
Fruits and spices are put into a jug and then poured with wine mixed with water, juice and sugar. Then, if desired, strong alcohol is added to the resulting substance.
The resulting mixture is infused in the refrigerator from 3 to 12 hours.
Crushed ice can be added both before infusion and immediately before serving.
Chilled sparkling and carbonated drinks are added to the jug just before serving.
Next, we will offer you one example of the ingredients for each type of drink. Having mastered the basic principles and proportions, you can safely embark on an open sea of experiments, in the hope that sooner or later you will get the most delicious sangria!
