What is retrogenia?

Good day. I have had for some time dental problems at my son’s. Already at the beginning it was suggested that there was some bite problembut only recently has it been confirmed to be retrogenia. The doctor made an appointment to discuss the treatment plan in detail, but I am terrified right now and would be very grateful if you could answer my questions. What is retrogenia? Can you explain this to me in some understandable way. Is retrogenia just some sort of genetic defect? How could she come from a child, if no one in the family had ever had such problems?

And the most important thing – is retrogenia fully curable? I don’t know what information to focus on during my next visit. Are there any checked retrogeny treatment methodswhich will be used in the son? I was looking for information on this subject, but it only shows surgical treatment of retrogenyand this seems to be a very invasive method of treatment and I wonder if there are any other treatments that can be used on my son. Thank you in advance for explaining to me what retrogenia is and how it is treated.

The doctor explains what retrogenia is all about

Retrogenia, or the back of the mandible, is a malocclusion which consists in the inhibition of the front growth of the mandible and changes in its structure. As a result, facial features change.

The chin is recessed and flattened. Mud lump is not developed. The angle of the lower jaw is enlarged. The lower part of the face becomes longer. A malocclusion is manifested by the withdrawal of the lower dental arch. Deflection of the upper and lower incisors is often observed. The so-called open bite. The causes of retrogeny are different. Retrogenism can be observed in rickets, in which, as a result of calcium and phosphate metabolism disorders most often caused by vitamin D deficiency, bone changes in the child’s body and many developmental disorders occur. The cause of back jaw formation may be arthropathy of the temporomandibular joints. We observe retrogenation in genetically determined syndromes, e.g. in Patau’s syndrome. The back can be affected by speech impediments.

The choice of treatment depends largely on the stage malocclusion in a child. Diagnostics is performed by a specialist in orthodontics. Impressions, orientation models, and imaging tests can be helpful. Treatment of retrogeny may be conservative, e.g. by using braces. Sometimes tooth extraction is necessary for treatment. The best results are obtained by surgical procedures that improve the anatomical position of the bones. It is worth starting diagnostics and malocclusion treatment as early as possible. Often times in children there are more options malocclusion repair.

I suggest waiting for an appointment with an orthodontist who will examine the child and assess the condition of the dentition and the advancement of the malocclusion. When choosing a treatment, information such as the child’s age and possible accompanying diseases are important. The doctor will suggest possible treatment methods and clarify any doubts.
