What is proliferation – can it lead to cancer development?

Proliferation is a biological term that describes the ability of cells to multiply. It is a feature of living organisms, regulated by the life cycle of cells.

Cell proliferation

The cells of the human body communicate with each other constantly. This is necessary for the cell cycle process to run smoothly and to avoid unnecessary or pathological duplication of cells in the body. Cell proliferation is nothing more than the process of their multiplication, which is a completely physiological state. When some cells die, new cells should take their place.

At a precise time, the cell cycle control system with the help of enzymes and proteins controls the cell cycle. When a cell receives the right signal, it divides and replicates.

The whole cycle is usually based on sending signals that inhibit the proliferation process, when the signal stops, the body begins to multiply and duplicate cells for regeneration, this is the case, for example, when the skin is interrupted.

Skin proliferation

This is a phenomenon that we can observe. Skin cell proliferation occurs when it is damaged. The wound interrupts the delivery of a signal that inhibits proliferation to the cells at its edges, and the cells begin working to heal the cut and regenerate damaged tissue.

Proliferacja endometrium

This is another physiological phenomenon that occurs in a woman’s body. During the menstrual cycle, between days 4 and 14 of the cycle, endometrial proliferation, that is, the proliferation of cells lining the uterus, occurs.

It is a cyclical process necessary for the proper functioning of a woman’s reproductive organs. After the menstrual period is over, the uterus begins to prepare for a possible pregnancy. Endometrial cells multiply, preparing the uterine cavity for embryo implantation. If fertilization is not achieved, the lining of the uterus will shed again during menstruation.

Bone proliferation

Bones are constantly being modeled. This does not only apply to bone fractures, but also to the physiological state. In order for the bones to be strong enough, but at the same time not to become too brittle, they need to be constantly remodeled. It is estimated that about 10% of them are remodeled each year. human bones.

Among the bone cells we can distinguish three types of carefully selected cells: osteocytes, osteoblasts and osteoclasts. In a properly functioning organism, the multiplication and destruction of individual types of cells regulates the proper condition of the bones.

Bone proliferation is a productive change located in the bone tissues: bone, periosteum, and in places where tendons attach to the bone. Changes can be identified by performing an X-ray examination. They can be a symptom of a rheumatic disease.

Neoplastic cell proliferation

When proliferation becomes uncontrolled, it leads to cancerous changes. Cancer cells are characterized by accelerated metabolism, which results in their rapid multiplication. The cause of cancer cell proliferation may be genetic – result from DNA mutation.
