Pregnyl is a prescription drug that is not reimbursed by the National Health Fund. One package of the drug contains 1 ampoule of powder and solvent for solution for injection, administered intramuscularly or subcutaneously. The drug contains 5000 IU of chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).

How does Pregnyl work?

The active substance is human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a human hormone that is physiologically produced during pregnancy by the developing embryo and then taken over by the placenta. One of the most important tasks hCG is to stimulate the yellow body in the ovary to produce progesterone, which is responsible for the maintenance of pregnancy. In the absence of pregnancy, production hCG however, it may indicate a disease: in women with ovarian cancer, in men with testicular cancer.

Human gonadotrophin also exhibits the activity of the LH hormone (lutropin, luteinizing hormone). LH is the hormone of the pituitary gland. In men, it is responsible for the proper functioning of the Leydig cells of the testosterone producing testicles. In women, an increase in LH levels towards the end of the follicular phase causes ovulation, and then LH is responsible for the formation of the corpus luteum and the production of progesterone and estrogens.

Administration of Pregnyl Its task is to provide hCG showing LH activity. Women are given Pregnyl at the end of the follicular phase to induce ovulation and during the luteal phase to maintain an adequate level of progesterone. When should I use Pregnyl?

Each time, treatment with Pregnyl must be under close medical supervision, and its use should be preceded by detailed hormonal and gynecological examinations.

In women, the drug is used for treatment of infertility caused by anovulation, provided that there are no other causes of infertility. It is also given to prevent corpus luteum failure. It can also be given to stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs for in vitro fertilization.

In men, Pregnyl is used to treat the following conditions: hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism (secondary endocrine failure of the testicles), delayed maturation associated with hypopituitarism, cryptorchidism (non-descent of the testicles) not due to an anatomical cause.

Contraindications and precautions when using Pregnyl

An absolute contraindication to the use of the drug there are hypersensitivity and hormone-dependent neoplasms. In women it must also not be used in the case of malformations of the genital organs that prevent pregnancy and uterine fibroids. It should also not be used Pregnylu during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Administration of hCG in women increases the risk of thromboembolism. The administration of the preparation may also result in undesirable hyperstimulation of the ovaries. In men particular care should be taken in the case of certain cardiological, neurological and renal disorders.
