What does ozena mean and how is it treated?

Good day. I have a question. I would like to ask what is ozena and how to treat it? This is a disease that the doctor found in my 56-year-old mother. She didn’t really want to tell me what was going on, anyway, it seems to me that the doctor himself didn’t really explain it to her. My mom did sinus problems, she often had a runny nose, she also often had a cold. Finally, a little at my urging, she went to the ENT specialist to check what was wrong with her and whether she could be helped with these sinuses.

Today my mother called me and it turned out that the doctor told her it might be ozena, but thorough tests will confirm it. Therefore, I would like to ask what is ozena and how to treat it? What it looks like at all ozene treatment? Are there any nasal drops or tablets for this or does it require some surgery, surgery? I know that my mother is concerned and I would like to explain to her exactly what she is suffering from and what awaits her before the next visit. Thank you very much in advance for each information and answer.

The doctor explains what ozena is

Chronic atrophic foul-smelling rhinitis (ozena) is a rare disease, mostly found in the Middle East. It is a progressive disease resulting from atrophy of the mucosa and bone scaffolding of the nose with widening of the nasal passages, filled with large, foul black or dark green, dry scabs. It leads to reduced nasal patency, impaired smell and constant feeling of bad taste in the mouth. The scabs cause difficulty breathing and soreness.

Bad smell is caused by the presence of bacteria in the nasal cavities. Patients may not experience the unpleasant odor as their olfactory nerve endings may have lost out. It usually occurs in the elderly. The disease is more common in women. The cause of its occurrence has not been fully understood. Suspected of being responsible for them bakteria Klebsiella ozenae. Genetic factors, endocrine disorders, environmental factors, deficiencies of vitamins and elements (iron), and autoimmune diseases can lead to the onset of the disease. The etiology is complex and not fully understood.

The method of treatment depends on the patient’s clinical condition, presented symptoms, severity of symptoms, accompanying diseases, therefore you should not self-medicate only after consulting a doctor. The method of treatment is selected by the ENT doctor, after consulting the patient individually, according to his needs. Conservative (non-invasive) treatment and surgery can be used. The main goal of conservative treatment is to moisturize the nasal cavities and remove the remaining crusts by rinsing the nasal cavities with a solution of saline and other salts, using ointments or suspensions with the addition of vitamin A, topical antibiotics and others. There are several methods of surgical treatment of chronic atrophic halitosis. For example, there is a narrowing of the nasal cavities, Young’s surgery, which involves closing the nasal cavities each for a period of 6 months and reopening it to allow time for the wounds to heal.
