What is NMR testing? What is it about? Should you prepare for it? Is the test performed under the NHF insurance? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.

What does the NMR test look like?

Hello, I would like to ask you what it is MRI of the head. I got a referral from a neurologist, but he didn’t explain exactly what it was and whether I needed it at all. For several months I have had strange headaches and dizziness and frequent fainting. I would like to add that all these symptoms appeared in me after a car accident that I had in October this year.

As a result, I have damaged cervical spine. The neurologist said these symptoms could be a consequence of the injury. That’s why he sent me for a checkup NMR of the head. But he didn’t explain to me what the examination was and where it should be. So my question is what is NMR testing?

Is the NMR examination carried out by the National Health Fund? If not, what is it NMR price? Should I go to some hospital or clinic, e.g. neurological? Do I have to prepare for this examination in any special way? Are there any side effects after this test? Does a neurologist rightly refer me to this study? I request information.

The doctor explains what the NMR examination looks like

Dear madam, NMR examination is also known as magnetic resonance imaging. It is a very sensitive and quick imaging test that allows you to visualize the structures inside our body. Importantly, it is a non-invasive and painless examination. I won’t go into the exact mechanism of action, but it’s worth knowing that this type of imaging is based on the phenomenon of magnetic resonance nuclear power, so a strong magnetic field must be created in order to visualize the specific structure inside the human body.

MRI examination it is widely used in neurology for imaging the brain and spinal cord because it shows these structures very accurately. It enables the detection of brain tumors, malformation changes, injuries or congenital changes. The imaging apparatus is in the form of a tube that is entered while lying down. The inside of the camera is quite cramped, so people with claustrophobia may feel very uncomfortable.

Unfortunately, the examination itself takes quite a long time, of course it depends on the area of the body to be imaged, but you should take into account the time of 30-45 minutes. Remember that during the examination you must not move as it may disturb the image.

The test is performed in diagnostic imaging facilities, whether in hospitals or private facilities. Of course, the examination can be performed at the National Health Fund, but you have to take into account the long waiting time, because the deadlines are distant. An alternative way is to perform the test privately, but it is associated with a fee ranging from 300 to 600 PLN.

Special preparation for the examination is not required, although there are several contraindications that exclude the patient from undergoing the examination. One of the most important is the presence of metal structures in the body, for example metal plates after bone fusion. The test is safe and has no side effects.

You are wondering if the neurologist rightly referred you to the examination. The occurrence of pain and dizziness after the injury is an indication for examination. So I propose to undergo an examination in accordance with the recommendations of a neurologist.
