The heat can lead to strokes, but not only that
Director of the County Hospital in Garwolin, a surgeon who also works in emergency medical teams, Krzysztof Żochowski pointed out that the heat intensifies cardiovascular problems, moreover, they can lead to strokes and dehydration, but also cause a number of symptoms that, at first glance, are not related to with high temperature.
«Yesterday in my office I had, for example, a few kidney colic. The thing is, people drink less, become dehydrated, and the symptoms of dehydration worsen. There are more such situations in hot weather than during a normal working day, ”said Żochowski.

Adequate hydration is important
Żochowski reminded us to avoid sunlight in hot weather and to drink the right amount of fluids. «Especially the elderly have a tendency to avoid catching up. In hot weather, let’s drink as much fluids as possible and be careful of ourselves, ”he said.
In hot weather, take your foot off the gas
The doctor noted that in addition to the greater number of trips to fainting caused by high temperature, the number of reports of injuries also increases in hot weather, because high temperature, e.g. it slows down our reflexes.
«Let’s get your foot off the gas. If we have to go somewhere, let’s take breaks, rest, ”he said.
He added that the Garwolin poviat, where he works, has 110. inhabitants and is one of the largest poviats in Mazovia in terms of acreage.
«In your opinion, how many ambulances does this poviat provide? Well, 3,5 ambulances, half of which means 12 hours a day, so if three people faint because of the heat, we have a very big problem »- noted Żochowski.
“Last Sunday I forgot about my managerial position and other titles, and as a regular employee, as a doctor on duty, I got into the ambulance because there was a need. We went to the + favorite + car crash site in the Garwolin poviat, where roads no. 801 and 76 intersect, at the entrance to Wilga. Two cars collided there, there were several injured people, five of which needed to be taken by ambulance. We put two people in each of them, another person in one, and the latter was sent from Konstancin Jeziorna anyway, because our ambulances performed different activities at that time »- he said.
The most serious interventions
Żochowski emphasized that the number of emergency medical teams was countable and appealed not to call ambulances to trivial cases.
When asked about the most serious interventions related to heat, he pointed to road accidents, accidents in agriculture and drowning. He also pointed out that the risk in hot weather is exacerbated by drinking alcohol.
«What I associate with heat and drama are field work and accidents in agriculture, because farmers are in a hurry to use this time of good weather. These are also traffic accidents. And one more thing – heat plus water. Head jump and tetraplegia, i.e. quadriplegia. This is perhaps the greatest misfortune I can imagine. A young, fit guy, because it happens more often in the case of men, within a few seconds from a normal, fully enjoying his life, an active man becomes a heavy handicapped addict fully from others »- he said.
Żochowski also appealed to always enter the water in a reasonable way, even during the hottest heat, and not to use unknown bathing areas.
«I have seen the cry of mothers whose children drowned in unknown waters. This is an absolutely unimaginable drama. Let us always enter the water in a rational manner, into tested water »- he added.
When asked how the work of medical staff changes in hot weather, he noted that it depends on where it is performed.
«We have to distinguish between certain things. When I was a young surgeon in the provinces, and it was the time of the year we are going through now, we got up before dawn, started operating in the morning, when it was not hot. At the moment, all operating theaters are air-conditioned, also e.g. in ambulances of emergency medical services and these are places where this time can be experienced comfortably, but if such an ambulance, for example, arrives in an accident, where a driver tired from the heat crashes into a tree or a different car and you have to perform a resuscitation action in full sun, the comfort of work is certainly incomparably worse »- he said.
