What is lipemia? What are the risks of lipemia? Is lipemia related to fats? What additional tests should be performed? Is it worth making any changes in the diet? How to start treatment? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.
What is lipemia?
Hello and welcome. Some time ago my husband (53 years old) had basic tests – blood, cholesterol, etc. My husband is overweight, but he is not very obese. He doesn’t eat very healthy, although he doesn’t eat very unhealthy either. Seems like a typical middle-aged man – sandwiches for breakfast, meat for dinner, etc. I sent my husband to the examination myself because he was feeling a bit worse lately. I was afraid my husband might have cholesterol problems due to lack of exercise and unhealthy eating.
He went to the tests and it turned out not bad, but when he went to the doctor with the results, he heard that he may be in danger of lipemia, but this will be confirmed by additional tests. Unfortunately, my husband did not ask exactly what is going on and what is the risk of it, so I would like to ask what is lipemia? Does it have to do with fats? Of course, I know that the doctor said to do additional tests and so on, but I wonder if I should change something in my husband’s diet now, start doing something. Please help.
Your doctor advises you on how to deal with lipemia
Lipemia is the clouding of a blood sample that is caused by the accumulation of lipoprotein particles. Lipoproteins are protein and lipid complexes, so in fact they are the carriers of fats in our body, they can be divided into chylomicrons, very low density lipoproteins (VLDL), low density lipoproteins (LDL) and high density lipoproteins ( HDL). However, only the largest lipoproteins, i.e. chylomicrons, whose function is intracellular transport of fatty acids in the postprandial period, contribute to lipemia.
Therefore, the most common the cause of lipemia is not keeping an appropriate interval between the last meal (or its too large volume) and blood sampling, i.e. it is best to keep a 12-hour interval, and the last meal should be light and healthy, with a low fat content. Lipemia can be diagnostic problems and cause some test results to be non-diagnostic. It is possible that this is why the doctor ordered additional tests.
Cholesterol, which the doctor pays attention to, and whose high result raises concerns about the occurrence of atherosclerosis, which is an important risk factor, including heart attack. The doctor usually pays attention to the level of LDL and HDL cholesterol. LDL is considered the “bad” cholesterol because it causes atherosclerosis, making them resistant to dilatation and narrower. HDL, in turn, is considered “good” cholesterol because it traps LDL-cholesterol and carries it back to the liver, preventing it from accumulating in the walls of the vessels causing them atherosclerosis.
In order to prevent hypercholesterolaemia and its negative effects on the human body, change the diet: low in salt, based on vegetables, fruit and whole grains, low in animal fats, consume “good” fats, i.e. polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA or in PUFA), i.e. omga-3 and omega-6. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in foods such as salmon, herring, mackerel, ljiana oil, some nuts, including walnuts, and seeds. Omega-6 fatty acids are more widely distributed and are found in many vegetable oils such as sunflower, grape seed, soybean, corn, rapeseed, seeds and nuts.
In addition, you should not smoke, lose weight, and drink alcohol in moderation.
