What is glucose intolerance?

Hello and welcome. My name is Adam, I’m 21 years old. I decided to write to you because I noticed that my roommate Karol has been acting a bit disturbing for the last few months. He goes to the kitchen almost every now and then to get a drink. When he works at the computer, he still has a water bottle by his bedside and is still drinking. Okay, I understand that it’s a good idea to keep your body hydrated, but it’s a bit of an exaggeration in this case. I don’t know how many liters he drinks during the day, but I think there will be around 4 or 5 of them.

In addition, he is still exhausted and every time I come back from university, he is asleep. Of course, he goes to the toilet just as often. I suggested he go get a checkup, but he’s stubborn and says he just feels worse and will get over it soon. I also noticed that the skin around his neck darkened. A girl studying medicine lives in the other room, and she suggested that Karol was ill glucose intolerance. I would ask for help as they are symptoms of glucose intolerance and what can it be? I would like to help a colleague. Could glucose intolerance make a colleague ill with something more serious? Which doctor should I go to for tests? Regards Adam from Poznań.

Your doctor explains what glucose intolerance is

Pathological increased thirst is called polydipsia. This is one of the symptoms of diabetes and usually develops within a few weeks. A sick person drinks from a few to several liters of fluid a day. Another symptom of diabetes is associated with polydipsia – polyuria, i.e. excessive urination. Usually, excessive fluid intake makes you need to go to the toilet at night. Here is another symptom – nocturia. Excessive sleepiness, weakness, susceptibility to infections, weight loss, presence of purulent lesions on the skin are also features of diabetes.

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease in which elevated blood glucose levels are observed. High blood glucose is called hyperglycemia. Additionally, hyperglycaemia is usually associated with the presence of glucose in the urine, ketonemia, and ketonuria. Depending on the cause that led to glucose metabolism disorders there are several types of diabetes. You mentioned a dark discoloration on the back of the neck. This could be a symptom dark keratosis (acanthosis nigricans), which occurs, inter alia, in in insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is a reduction in the sensitivity of tissues to glucose.

Obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise, and improper diet predispose to glucose metabolism disorders. Suspicion of diabetes or insulin resistance requires diagnostics. It is very important to diagnose diabetes early in order to slowly prevent the development of life-threatening complications. In the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus tests include the level of fasting blood glucose, the glucose load test, the determination of the level of insulin in the blood, the concentration of C-peptide in the blood, and the testing of antibodies. The choice of treatment depends on the severity of the disease, as well as on the type of diabetes, age of the patient, and other burdens.

It will be wise for a colleague to go to the GP. The doctor, after collecting a complete history and examining the patient, will decide on further proceedings. He will perform the necessary diagnostics and, if necessary, start the appropriate treatment.
