😉 Hello everyone! Friends, you still don’t know what fat shaming is? This article and video will help you understand this phenomenon of time.
If you don’t know how to joke, humiliate and pass off as a good joke. React to any condemnation with accusations of a lack of sense of humor.
No matter how crazy it sounds, but this approach is quite common in modern society. Jokes about fat people, like jokes about stupid women, are mostly horrible and not original.
Once again, when I came across sexist and fat-shaming ads, I decided to bring this up.
Fatshaming – what is it
Fatshaming (English fat – fat, shaming – condemnation) – actions, statements, ridicule, stigmatization of a person because of his weight. Often it includes humiliation of dignity hidden under the guise of concern for the health of the object of judgment. Fatshaming leads to depression, eating disorders. More often this applies to women.
People who wear small or standard clothing sizes can’t just tell a fat person that fat shaming doesn’t exist. After all, there are many of its manifestations in everyday life: in the media, culture and even in communication.
Doctors regularly “reproach” fat people for being overweight, relying on the high morality of being slim. Oppression of overweight people exists. Moreover, it poses a serious danger to health and well-being.
Fatshaming doesn’t help people get slimmer, according to research. This stigma does much more harm than good to fat people.
Hopefully most people are still on the side of those who have experienced fat shaming. However, sometimes we can accidentally stigmatize obese people. To reduce the number of such cases, you need to rethink your speech and the ideas that have been hammered into our heads for many years.
Below are seven hidden fat shaming phrases to eliminate from your vocabulary.
“I am understanding if a person is fat because he has medical problems or something like that”
At first glance, this does not seem to be the most terrible thing to say. You demonstrate an understanding that the reasons for heavy weight can be very diverse. Well done, right?
Not so fast. Selectively giving people … humanity and sorting them based on their body size is a blunder, to say the least. Accepting others should have nothing to do with whether they are overweight due to thyroid disease. This should happen without any exceptions!
“You’re not fat! You are beautiful!”
This statement is wrong because it reinforces the idea that excess weight and beauty are mutually exclusive. Fullness and beauty intersect, do you understand? People are overweight. And they are beautiful. End of the sentence.
“Please don’t call yourself fat. Don’t say that about yourself ”
Fact: Many people use the word “fat” as a grudge. However, many fat people aim to change the meaning of the word by changing the derogatory connotation. A kind of empowerment.
You don’t care when someone under two meters says “tall” to themselves, do you? So let people express their love for themselves in the way they want to.
“Uh, I’m so fat”
Didn’t we just say that it is absolutely normal for fat people to call themselves fat if they want to? Yes! If they are really thick.
When standard sized people, who have never suffered from weight stigma, decide to use the word in relation to themselves, they negate all the work of changing meaning that was mentioned above.
Don’t make the word “fat” a joke, don’t use the term negatively to get compliments. All of us from time to time can be unhappy with the shape of our bodies. But using the word “because it’s cute” doesn’t help anyone.
“You have such a cute face!”
Again, this looks like something really positive, right? Well, fat people are already used to being praised solely for the attractiveness of their faces. Probably, this phrase is often used as a micro-aggression towards overweight people.
You’ve probably heard at least once: “You would be so beautiful if you lost a few pounds. You have such a beautiful face! ”. And then what is wrong with the rest of the “parts” of me ?!
“I can’t believe I lost 10 kilos! I feel amazing! ”
Even if you have a positive attitude and accept fat people, even if you do not advise anyone to go on a diet, even if you feel great about your weight loss, talking about dieting is too sensitive for many overweight people.
We have already gone through years of direct or hidden hints that it would not hurt us to lose a few pounds, which makes all sorts of “dietary conversations” around almost unbearable.
It’s great that you are happy with the changes in your life and happy, but mentioning specific numbers can be detrimental to the psychological health of those around you.
Of course, talking about the joy of losing weight in a positive way may be acceptable. But note: how often do you actually see “BEFORE” and “AFTER” bodies on the right side of the plus-size body?
“Oh, you put it on ?! You are so brave! “
Fact: We know that people judge and shame others for their weight and shape. All the time. If your friend decides to go out in a short skirt, bodycon dress or blouse tucked into trousers, she’s probably already thought about what the consequences of violating the social rules of wearing clothes for obese people will be for her.
People who have experienced fat shaming are aware of the danger and obviously have enough confidence to ignore it. So tell your friend that her outfit is cool and leave her alone.
Our understanding of what and how to say to reduce the “pressure” of fat people we know and love does not guarantee that from time to time we will not “press” them.
So if you accidentally say something from fat shaming, just apologize and try to be the best in the future. The very fact of apologizing will already distinguish you from 80% of people.
