What does dermatofibroma mean? Is a dermatofibroma an indication for a visit to a dermatologist? Is it a serious disease? How is dermatofibroma treated? What costs should be expected for treating dermatofibroma? The question is answered by the drug. Anna Mitschke.
What does dermatofibroma mean?
Good day. There have been some strange little changes on my arms lately. They look a bit like little bumps sticking out of the skin. They are not painful and do not bother me in particular, but on my last visit to my GP, I decided to show them to him and ask for advice. The doctor only told me that it was probably a dermatofibroma and if I wanted a more detailed opinion, I should consult a dermatologist.
At first I found it pointless, but after some time I started to worry if it was really something that I might underestimate. I am particularly interested in what is dermatofibroma? Does such a diagnosis of a doctor mean that I should, however, consult a dermatologist? Is dermatofibroma dangerous? I would also be grateful for the information, what if the dermatologist confirms that I have dermatofibroma? Are there any ways to treat dermatofibromathat could be used. How is such treatment usually performed and, importantly, will it be expensive? Thanks in advance for all the tips.
The doctor explains what a dermatofibroma is
A dermatofibroma is a hard fibroma. We also distinguish soft fibromas – fibroma molle. These are benign neoplastic changes originating in connective tissue. Dermatofibroma occurs regardless of age. It takes the form of small, single, hard lesions on the skin. It is not possible to compress them and insert them deep into the tissues. They are usually skin-colored or brown. They can be shifted along with the skin against the ground. Usually they are located on the lower or upper limbs. They typically appear in old age.
In the differentiation of dermatofibromas, histiocytomas, fibrotic hemangiomas or keloids are taken into account. Histological examination with specimen collection is conclusive. Soft fibromas are nodules that hang down baggy. Sometimes they can be inserted deep into the skin by pressure. Usually they are numerous. They can be skin-colored or light brown. Soft fibromas occur in Recklinghausen’s disease. The neck and the nape are often localized. They accompany patients throughout their lives, they do not disappear on their own. In the differentiation of soft fibromas, one should remember about soft cellular nevus, papillomas and lipomas.
The cause of the changes is not fully understood. There is a certain genetic predisposition. Treatment is not necessary. Lesions that patients would like to get rid of can be treated surgically. Often, after the excision of the lesion, a histopathological examination is performed to verify the diagnosis. The changes can cause cosmetic defects, so patients often decide to remove them. Especially if the fibromas are located in very visible places. Fractional CO2 laser, cryotherapy and electroresection are also used in the treatment of fibromas. Treatments are performed in dermatological or aesthetic medicine offices. The price of the treatments depends on the office. I suggest going to a specialist dermatologist who will verify the diagnosis and decide on further treatment.
