Buspirone is the name of an anxiolytic drug and belongs to the so-called psychotropic drugs. Chemically, buspirone is an organic substance derived from azaspyrodecandion. It is used orally.
In what drugs can buspirone be found?
Buspirone is used in tablets in the form of buspirone hydrochloride. On the Polish market it can be found in preparations under the trade name Spamilan in doses of 5 and 10 mg. This drug is not reimbursed by the National Health Fund. It can only be obtained with a prescription by a doctor.
What is the mechanism of action of buspirone?
Buspirone, apart from its anxiolytic effect, has no other effects that are often shown by psychotropic drugs (such as anxiolytics, anticonvulsants, sedatives). The drug acts on serotonergic and noradrenergic (stimulant) as well as cholinergic and dopaminergic (inhibitory) receptors in the brain. Therefore, it is used in the treatment of anxiety, including those associated with depression. It is used for short-term treatment.
Contraindications to the use of buspirone and precautions
The drug containing buspirone should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to this drug substance. Conditions such as epilepsy, renal failure and liver failure are also contraindications to the use of buspirone. It should also not be taken in acute food poisoning.
Buspirone may not be taken during pregnancy and lactation.
It is not recommended for use in children and adolescents under 18 years of age.
The drug must not be used simultaneously with alcohol. Buspirone interacts with many drugs, so before using it, read the leaflet carefully and inform the doctor about all other medications used. For example, when used with some medications for depression (MAO inhibitors), your blood pressure can increase. On the other hand, the use with erythromycin and itraconazole causes a significant increase in the concentration of buspirone alone in the blood.
The most common side effects of buspirone are headache, dizziness, and somnolence (very common). Often there are also other symptoms (e.g. problems with concentration, nervousness, sleep problems, gastrointestinal problems) – if you notice any side effects, please consult your doctor and read the package leaflet carefully. In addition, buspirone may impair driving and the operation of machinery.
Before use, read the leaflet, which contains indications, contraindications, data on side effects and dosage as well as information on the use of the medicinal product, or consult your doctor or pharmacist, as each drug used improperly is a threat to your life or health.
