What is brown adipose tissue?

Brown adipose tissue is a beneficial type of fat intended to burn energy and glucose for heat. We already know that people who have more body fat are leaner and have lower blood sugar levels. Scientists also believe that ‘white’ fat can turn into brown fat under certain conditions. Recent studies have shown that low temperatures can increase the amount in the body.

How to increase the content of brown adipose tissue?

Dr. Paul Lee decided to check how the ambient temperature affects the amount of brown fat. The subjects functioned normally every day, but slept in a room where the temperature was properly adjusted. Initially, a neutral temperature was set – in which a person does not lose heat or give it away – 24 degrees C. Every month the temperature changed and was respectively: 19 degrees C, 24 degrees C and 27 degrees C. Throughout the study period, the brown adipose tissue content was measured in the subjects. It turned out that at the lowest temperature its share increased by 30-40%, while at the highest temperature it immediately normalized.

Together with the increase in brown adipose tissue, insulin sensitivity and energy burning rate improved.

Other studies published in the previous month examined the content of brown adipose tissue from the abdomen and thighs in winter and summer. It turned out that the cold increases the proportion of brown fat. Interestingly, the increase would not be so significant in people with BMI over 30. In obese people, there was a noticeable dysfunction in fat thermogenesis.

Does temperature affect weight loss?

Keeping an eye on the right temperature in the apartments can apparently not only reduce the risk of being overweight, but also of diseases such as diabetes. This is important, especially in times of the widespread obesity epidemic, according to the recently published Polish Weight Loss Report. So you should try to do whatever you can to stop this tendency.
