Hemorrhoids is a disease of hemorrhoidal veins, in which expansion, inflammation and thrombosis of blood vessels is formed. Like many chronic diseases, it is characterized by an undulating course – periods of exacerbation are replaced by remission. In the acute stage, hemorrhoids are treated with drugs. With the ineffectiveness of drug therapy, surgical intervention is performed.
In the conservative treatment of hemorrhoids, agents from various pharmacological groups are used – and venotonics, and hemostatic, and anti-inflammatory. Today we will talk about two popular remedies – Relief and Natalsid. At first glance, they have little in common, but both drugs are successfully used in the complex therapy of hemorrhoids. How they work, we will tell in more detail in the article.
The drug and its characteristics | Relief | Natalicide |
Pharmacological group | Remedy for the treatment of hemorrhoids | Hemostatic drug |

Form of issue | Rectal suppositories, ointment | Rectal suppositories |
Manufacturer | Bayer (Germany) | “Stada” (Russia) |

Both drugs are dispensed in a pharmacy without a prescription.
Indications for use
Despite the different composition, Natalsid and Relief have common indications:
hemorrhoids;
anal fissures.
But here it is important to clarify: Relief can be used at any stage of the development of the disease, while Natalsid is used for bleeding hemorrhoids and anal fissures. Its main task is to stop the bleeding and speed up the healing of the wound.
Natalsid is also used in the complex therapy of proctosigmoiditis – inflammation of the lower intestines. The drug is also used in the postoperative period: it prevents the development of the inflammatory process and enhances tissue regeneration.
How do hemorrhoid remedies work?
Let us consider in more detail the principle of action of each drug.
Relief
The main component of Relief is phenylephrine hydrochloride. This is a drug from the group of adrenomimetics, and its main action is vasoconstrictor. Phenylephrine leads to spasm of the vascular wall and reduces its lumen. It acts mainly locally on small vessels.
During therapy with phenylephrine observed:
decrease in exudation – effusion of fluids from tissues;
subsidence of the acute inflammatory process;
reduction of hyperemia – redness of tissues against the background of inflammation.
After a course of therapy, the patient’s condition improves – pain, burning and itching in the anal area disappears, tissue swelling decreases. Mineral oils, which are part of the drug, accelerate the healing of tissues.
Pharmacokinetics (distribution of the drug in tissues) has not been studied. There is no evidence that phenylephrine enters the systemic circulation. It is assumed that the ointment and suppositories act exclusively locally.
Natalicide
Sodium alginate is a remedy from the group of hemostatics. It is a natural polysaccharide obtained from the processing of brown seaweed.
The main effects of sodium alginate:
hemostatic action. It enhances platelet aggregation and promotes their adhesion, ensures blood clotting and stops bleeding from hemorrhoids.
Anti-inflammatory action. When applied topically, it reduces swelling and redness of tissues, relieves pain, itching and burning in the anus.
reparative action. Accelerates tissue healing.
The pharmacokinetics of Natalside has not been studied: there is no data on the rate of absorption and distribution of the drug in tissues.
Evaluation of the effectiveness of drugs
Relif and Natalsid are actively discussed in the Russian and foreign medical literature, but there are no reviews comparing these agents. The drugs have a different mechanism of action and a different niche of application, so it is impossible to say unequivocally which one is better – it all depends on the characteristics of the course of the disease. Therefore, we will consider each tool separately and find out if they are really effective.
Relief
The drug was not very interested in foreign scientists, so we were unable to find relevant information in the international database of medical knowledge. Let us turn to Russian-language sources, where Relief positioned as a first-line drug in the outpatient practice of a proctologist. The authors of a review from 2014 speak of it as one of the best remedies for local treatment of hemorrhoids. They also emphasize that the use of the drug is most effective in combination with non-drug therapy (diet, physical activity).
Specialists of the Coloproctology Center in Moscow count them.that Relief effectively copes with the task of hemorrhoids and anal fissures. Referring to their experience, they recommend the drug to women in the postpartum period. A clinical study conducted on the basis of the center showed that in 87,5% of patients a significant improvement occurs during therapy (itching, burning and bleeding in the anal area disappears).
Natalicide
A review of the medical literature shows that Natalsid is more often used in the chronic course of the disease, but is not very effective in the acute stage. In Russian-language sources, the drug is recommended for inflammatory diseases of the rectum и hemorrhoids in pregnant women and in the postpartum period. Conducted clinical studies showed: Natalside inhibits the activity of the inflammatory process and accelerates tissue regeneration.
Application Scheme
The dosage and duration of the drug is determined by the doctor, taking into account the severity of the patient’s condition.
Suppositories Natalsid and Relief are administered rectally after preliminary hygiene procedures and bowel cleansing (during defecation or after an enema).
Relief ointment is applied in a thin layer to the affected area outside or inside of the anus.
Adverse Reactions
Relief and Natalsid do not penetrate into the bloodstream and do not cause systemic reactions. Sometimes, in response to the use of the drug, an allergy develops. At the site of application, itching, burning, there may be rashes on the skin. If such symptoms appear, stop treatment immediately and consult a doctor.
Противопоказания
Relief is not used for thromboembolic disease – worsening of the condition is possible. It is not prescribed together with drugs that reduce blood pressure, and MAO inhibitors.
Both drugs are not used during pregnancy and lactation, with identified intolerance to the components.
In childhood, Relief is used from the age of 12, Natalsid – from the age of 14.
Conclusions
Relief and Natalsid are used in proctology for the treatment of hemorrhoids, anal fissures and inflammatory diseases. Relief can be used in the acute stage of the disease, Natalsid – mainly in the chronic course of the process.
Relief and Natalsid are mainly spoken about in Russian-language literature. The funds are recognized as quite effective and safe, but large studies on this issue have not been conducted.
Both drugs are well tolerated and rarely cause adverse reactions.
