Furagin and Furamag are broad-spectrum antimicrobials. They are used in medical practice for the treatment of diseases of the urinary system, infections of the skin and soft tissues. The composition of the drugs are very similar, but there is one significant difference that changes our understanding of these drugs. Read more about the indications, mechanism of action and features of the application in the article.

When drugs are prescribed
Furagin and Furamag differ only in one auxiliary component. This affects the absorption of the drug in the body, but not the main principle of its action. Therefore, the indications for the use of these antimicrobial agents are the same:
urogenital infections in men and women: cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis (inflammation of the bladder, urethra and kidneys, respectively);
gynecological infections – inflammation of the uterus and appendages;
infections of the skin and soft tissues, including after injuries and burns.
Furazidin-based preparations are also prescribed after operations on the organs of the urinary system to prevent the development of infectious complications and suppuration of the sutures.
Operating principle
Furazidin as part of both drugs is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent from the group of nitrofurans. It is active against most known pathogens of urogenital infections, including:
gram-positive coccal microorganisms: Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp;
Gram-negative rods: Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., Klebsiella spp., Enterobacter spp.
Not all urogenital microorganisms are sensitive to the drug. In particular, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus spp., Acinetobacter spp., Proteus spp., Serratia spp. are resistant to it. At the same time, resistance to the drug develops rather slowly and does not reach significant severity, which allows it to be used for most infections of the urinary tract and genital organs.
The mechanism of action of furazidin is not fully understood. It is known that it acts as a hydrogen acceptor and competes with it in the chain of natural oxidative processes. Furazidin knocks hydrogen out of the way, inhibits cellular respiration and prevents the synthesis of energy necessary for the normal growth and reproduction of bacteria. It also inhibits the formation of DNA and, to a lesser extent, RNA of microorganisms. This mechanism is specific for nitrofurans, so furazidin acts on those bacteria that other drugs cannot cope with.
The action of the drug can be bacteriostatic or bactericidal. In the first case, it only inhibits the growth of microorganisms, in the second, it also destroys them. It depends on the concentration of the active substance in the focus. At a level of 10 to 20 µg/ml, the drug acts only bacteriostatically. With a doubling of the concentration, it acquires a bactericidal ability.
With magnesium or without? What affects the effectiveness of drugs
Furamag is in some way an improved version of the drug Furagin. Magnesium is added to it, which does not directly affect the mechanism of action of the antimicrobial agent, but determines its transformation in the body. Clinical researches showed: the introduction of magnesium carbonate significantly increases the bioavailability of the drug when taken orally.
Furamag was developed at the Institute of Organic Synthesis in Latvia based on the potassium salt of furazidin and magnesium carbonate in a ratio of 1:1. Magnesium prevents the conversion of furazidin in the acidic environment of the stomach and provides more complete absorption in the small intestine. The bioavailability of the active substance Furamag is 2,5-3 times higher than that of Furagin – and this allows you to get the desired therapeutic effect in a lower dosage.
Application Scheme
Rules for the use of drugs Furamag and Furagin do not differ:
Inside adults 50-100 mg three times a day after meals. For children, the dosage is calculated individually, taking into account weight and age.
Outwardly 2-3 times a day for washing wounds.
Locally 2-3 times a day in the form of mouth and throat rinses.
Therapy lasts 7-10 days, depending on the severity of the disease.
Important:
Preparations for oral administration are recommended to be washed down with plenty of water – this way you can reduce the likelihood of adverse reactions.
During therapy, you can not take alcohol – this exacerbates the toxic effects of the drug.
If you miss a tablet, you can not increase the dosage of the drug – you just need to continue treatment according to the recommended scheme. Increasing the dosage creates a load on the internal organs.
You can not take Furamag and Furagin together with sulfonamides – the risk of bleeding increases; with ascorbic acid – the acidity of urine increases.
Adverse Reactions
Undesirable effects occur against the background of the use of both drugs:
Digestive tract: nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, liver damage.
Nervous system: headache, polyneuritis.
Allergic reactions in the form of skin rashes.
If these symptoms appear, stop treatment and consult a doctor.
Противопоказания
Furamag and Furagin are not used in the presence of such conditions:
Individual intolerance.
Pregnancy and lactation.
In children under 3 years of age.
Chronic renal failure.
In patients with impaired renal function, the risk of adverse reactions increases.
Conclusions
To sum up:
Furamag and Furagin are antimicrobial drugs. They contain one active ingredient – furazidin, but Furamag is distinguished by the addition of magnesium.
Furamag and Furagin are used to treat infections of the urinary system and skin. Can be used to prevent complications after urological operations. They have a wide and unique spectrum of action – they are effective against many urogenital infections, including those that other antibiotics cannot cope with.
Furamag is an improved version of Furagin. It has greater bioavailability, which means it can be used at a lower dosage.
