What is atopic dermatitis and how to know if you have it

The first bell is very dry skin, prone to peeling. We learned from experts the main signs of the appearance of this type of dermatitis, the reasons for the appearance and how to treat it.

Sometimes this disease is called eczema, dermatitis or atopic dermatitis, but in Russia, the latter expression is most prevalent. It is believed that this disease most often occurs in children in the first year of their life, but this type of dermatitis sometimes occurs in adults.

Most people get this type of dermatitis before the age of 5 and live with it all their lives, it is extremely rare for this disease to appear at an older age. Most often, this disease occurs in people with very dry skin and is accompanied by severe itching and redness. According to the statistics of American scientists, 20% of children all over the world have atopic dermatitis, while in adults this percentage is slightly less.

“Atopic dermatitis is a common dermatological disease that definitely requires a separate approach. This diagnosis is made strictly in the dermatovenerologist’s office, who makes strictly individual prescriptions based on the test results, as well as depending on the stage of the disease, ”explains Daria Kolesova, Faceology brand cosmetologist.

Scientists are confident that this is a disease transmitted genetically… It most often occurs if a family member has atopic dermatitis, asthma, or hay fever (an allergy to grass pollen). The presence of one or more of these diseases can be a major factor in the onset of dermatitis in a child.

Another reason for the occurrence is City of residence person. Most often, dermatitis occurs in residents of a developed country, in a city with a high level of pollution or in those born in a cold climate.

Also, dermatologists have found that it is girls who most often face this disease – perhaps due to the fact that their body is more susceptible to allergies.

Actually it is almost impossible to cure atopic dermatitisbut dermatologists make up list of recommendations, thanks to which it will be possible to prevent the worsening of dermatitis, soothe the skin, relieve itching and reduce emotional stress.

The treatment plan often includes not only special skin care, but also lifestyle changes and medications. All this will help prevent outbreaks of atopic dermatitis.

“For atopic dermatitis, cosmetics are used that are able to restore the stratum corneum of the skin, such remedies are called cornotherapy. Corneotherapeutic agents are based on lipids, ceramides, urea, hyaluronic acid, omega acids. These components have a regenerating effect on the skin and prevent irritation. Also, in no case should the composition of such products include components that are aggressive for the skin – acids, surfactants, emulsifiers, as well as fragrances and dyes, ”explains Daria Kolesova.

Particular attention should be paid to personal hygiene. So, dermatologists advise people with this disease:

  • swim in warm, not hot water;

  • if possible, limit the time of taking baths to 5 or 10 minutes;

  • it is best to completely exclude the use of soaps and shower gels – as a rule, they dry the skin very much, and you definitely do not need this, so you can sometimes use a mild skin cleanser, preferably without fragrances;

  • after bathing, you do not need to dry yourself with a towel, but dab your skin with it so as not to irritate it.

You need to take care of problem skin constantly, so all dermatologists advise their patients to use moisturizing cream at least twice a dayas this will prevent dry and flaky skin. Needed constantly monitor air temperature и moisture levelavoid situations where the air is very dry.

Julia Gallyamova, skin care consultant, expert of the brands Ariel, Lenor and Fairy, spoke about the non-obvious causes of atopic dermatitis and the effect of the psychological state of a person on it.

– There are many indications of the presence psychological role in the development of relapse in patients with atopic dermatitis. And, for example, sleep disturbance in patients is directly related to the frequency of recurrent symptoms of this disease. In this case, a vicious circle is formed: sleep is disturbed due to intense itching, as a result of which the psychoemotional state suffers, which also affects the human body.

It was found that out of 84 examined patients with atopic dermatitis, 52 people (62%) are in a state of anxiety, and 22 people (26%) are in a state of depression. Sleep problems were identified not only in adults, but also in children: 85% of preschool age, in whom the average number of awakenings was 2,7 times per night, and the total sleep loss was 2,6 hours per night.

Very often in patients with AD, various allergens that provoke the release of histamine can act as non-obvious triggers of exacerbation of itching. These include:

  • household chemicals;

  • poorly washed linen and clothes with powder particles on the surface;

  • poor quality powder. It is important to choose the right product, with labels that are approved by the quality control organizations;

  • the composition of the fabrics of the clothes and underwear you are wearing. It is necessary that the wardrobe items are made from natural fabrics, such as cotton.
