Argon is a gas that is a byproduct of the production of oxygen and nitrogen. In industry, it is obtained from the fractional distillation of liquid air. It has no smell, taste and color, it is also non-flammable and non-toxic, so we do not have to worry about its presence on the product packaging.

Is argon harmful?

Argon is one of the unconventional gases used for packaging in a modified atmosphere. It was investigated that the use of an argon-rich modified atmosphere for broccoli packaging inhibited the growth of microorganisms in the stored product. Atmospheres rich in argon and helium can modify the penetration of gases such as oxygen, nitrogen and ethylene into the tissue of the product. Argon and helium, due to the smaller particle size, diffuse faster into the tissue than diatomic nitrogen.
