What is ankylosis manifested?

Hello. My mom currently has suspicion of ankylosis. She is currently waiting for the last imaging tests that will confirm this, but I would like to prepare for what awaits her, so I would like to know what ankylosis is? Will ankylosis keep mom’s joints painful? I admit that it took me a long time to persuade her to do more serious diagnostics, and now that she heard this name at the doctor, she is quite scared. I would like to calm her down and somehow normally explain what ankylosis is and where it comes from, but I am not XNUMX% sure myself.

I will also be grateful for information about what it looks like treatment of ankylosis? My mom now mostly uses over-the-counter medications to relieve pain, but this is only a temporary pain relief. Are there any others effective methods of treating ankylosiswhich mom will be able to use? I will be grateful for all the information on this topic. I will just add that my mother is now 67 years old and she started having problems with her joints a few years ago. Only now, however, the symptoms of ankylosis became so bothersome that she decided to seek medical attention.

The doctor explains what ankylosis is

Ankylosis is a disease of the osteoarticular system and the muscular system that causes immobilization and stiffness of the affected joints. This leads to limited mobility and the occurrence of pain. Depending on the severity of the disease, stiffness in the joint may be complete or partial. Ankylosis worsens the quality of life of patients. It impairs their daily functioning. Various joints may be affected by the disease. It happens that it includes the spine joints, the hip joint, knee joint, shoulder joint, elbow joint, ankle joint, or smaller joints such as the temporomandibular joint. The presence of pathology may be due to the inflammatory process in the surrounding muscle and tendon tissues as well as the structures within the joint itself.

Various disease states can lead to the development of the disease. Various types of injuries and micro-injuries, surgical procedures, long-term immobilization, congenital diseases involving bones and joints, intra-articular infections, rheumatic diseases, e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, can be mentioned here. Initially, the disease may manifest itself as swelling and an increase in joint heat. The joint space becomes narrow and it is filled with fibrous tissue. As a result, there is a mobility impairment in the joint and muscle contractions. Pathology is accompanied by pain symptoms.

The disease is progressive and it is therefore very important to start treatment early. The treatment uses pharmacotherapy, mainly non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and analgesics. Physiotherapy is essential in the treatment process as it extends the period of physical fitness. Surgical treatment is used to treat severe, advanced lesions. The effects of treatment depend on the degree of advancement of the changes and the patient’s health condition. Imaging tests, eg X-rays of the affected joint, are helpful in the diagnosis, as they can reveal pathologies. If you have any further questions, please consult your doctor who will dispel any doubts.
