What is a washing machine drain cuff? How to choose? 7 tips for the home master

To install a brand new washing machine, not only skill is required, but also special parts and tools. The washing machine drain cuff allows you to connect the drain hose to the central sewer at the last stage of the CMA installation.

What is a drain hose cuff?

The method of connecting the drain depends on the location of the SMA in the house and the sewer wiring. The simplest solution is to connect a washbasin or sink to the siphon through a special pipe coming out of the glass, but knowledgeable craftsmen do not recommend doing this. The fact is that after several years of service, the siphon becomes clogged, water fills the sink during the spin cycle, and this is not only inconvenient, but also threatens to flood the neighbors. It happens that the contents of the sink, including food residues and grease, get into the machine. Therefore, the safest method is to connect using a tee or directly to the sewer, while the siphon pipe must be closed with a plug.

Modern plastic pipes are much wider than the diameter of a washing machine hose. To ensure a snug fit and prevent it from popping out during intensive draining, they came up with a special rubber seal. In the language of plumbers, this gasket is called a reduction or a cuff for a drain hose.

How to choose and install the sealing cuff in the sewer?

The stores sell cuffs of different sizes, configurations, colors. Most apartments have a plastic pipeline installed, it has a standard diameter of 40 or 50 mm. To connect the drain, you should buy a 45 or 90 degree tee with a diameter of 50 mm, insert it into the pipe without removing the thin o-ring. It happens that the tee is produced according to other standards and is not included in the main pipe. To do this, remove the sealing ring, lubricate it with sealant for plumbing, also process the outer edge of the plastic tee, insert it with a force of several centimeters. If there is no sealant at hand, a soapy solution will serve as a replacement. There is another option: for this, they take a 40 mm tee and connect it through a 50 * 40 mm cuff, such a joint will be more reliable.

It is more convenient to put the seal on the tee, and only then insert it into the sewer pipe.

For draining, a reduction of 50 * 25 mm and 50 * 20 mm is produced, where 20 and 25 mm is the diameter of the inner hole. The most suitable option is 50 * 20 mm, it allows you to insert the hose most tightly. But it is difficult to find such a size in stores, they usually offer 50 * 25 mm and even 50 * 32 mm. It is not recommended to buy the latter even after much persuasion from the sales assistant – the seal does not wrap around the hose at all, which makes it useless to stay in the sewer.

The procedure for connecting the SMA to the drain is shown in the video:

Important! If the diameter of the tee is 40 mm, then the drain seal must be taken 40 * 25 mm or 40 * 20 mm.

Non-standard connection

Some houses still have cast-iron sewers. Usually, a reduction of 72 * 50 mm is used to connect the elbow to the tee. The parts to be joined must be dry and clean, inside the cast-iron socket is lubricated with a sealant, then a cuff and a plastic adapter are inserted.

If the seal rubber is old, hard, and does not fit into the pipe, leave it for 20 minutes. in hot water to soften, it will easily enter the desired hole.

After successfully connecting the washing machine hose, connect the corrugation from the siphon. It is enough to insert it into the free hole of the tee, wrapping it with a fum tape. Corrugation is usually produced with a diameter of no more than 40 mm, but there are rare exceptions. If it does not enter the drain hole, make a neat cut at the end to slightly compress the edge. This must be done without diligence – fragile plastic easily cracks, and the siphon will have to be changed.

After installing the washing machine, it is better to check all connections: run the machine without laundry and drain the water. If, under the pressure of water, the hose does not fly out of the rubber band, there are no drops, no streams of water, then the installation was successful. You should also check the connection of the siphon corrugations.

Conclusions

  • The drain cuff is a gasket between the sewer pipe and the SMA drain hose.
  • It comes in different sizes, for a standard connection you should choose 50 * 20 mm.
  • Before buying a tee and reduction, measure the diameter of the pipes with a ruler.
  • Installation does not always go smoothly; with non-standard pipelines, parts are selected to the desired size.
  • It is better not to connect the drain hose to the siphon glass through a pipe – this may result in flooding of neighbors or a breakdown of the machine.
  • To avoid leaks, you can use a special sealant.
  • If over time the gasket loses its elasticity, then the structure is dismantled, and the cuff is changed.
