What might a swollen upper eyelid indicate? Could it be an allergy to makeup remover? How can swelling be relieved? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.

What could be the causes of a swollen upper eyelid?

Good morning, I noticed this morning when I woke up that I have swollen eyelid in the corner of the eye (left eye). It worried me a lot, as I did not notice any disturbing symptoms when I went to bed. Apart from the swelling being visible, my eye is red and it itches a lot. The worst thing is that the swollen upper eyelid hurts.

I don’t know what causes my upper eyelid swollen, what could have caused it. I would like to add that, just like every evening, I removed my eyes after the whole day, cleaned my face with a face wash gel and applied the cream. The only thing that comes to mind is that I changed the make-up remover, which is based on many natural ingredients.

Czy swollen upper eyelid is the effect of an allergy to this product? It is puzzling that one upper eyelid is swollen, and there is no puffiness in the other eye. Can I relieve this swelling with some home remedies? What can I use to stop itching as well? What is the treatment in this case? I am asking for advice.

The doctor suggests what causes a swollen upper eyelid

The most common reason swelling of the eyelid there is an allergic reaction – local, contact or systemic (allergic rhinitis, angioedema). When it comes to the contact background (which most likely occurs in your case), the key procedure in this situation is to eliminate the agent that caused the allergic reaction.

It can be triggered by a new cosmetic, but also tested and used many times. Especially natural ingredients in cosmetics can cause allergies! It is recommended to rinse the eyelid with a physiological saline solution, then removing the lenses if we use them. Then use a cold dressing on swollen eyelid.

Check if you should consult a doctor? Go through the initial medical interview yourself.

If the condition of the eyelid does not improve, slowly and carefully put aside other cosmetics used around the eyes or those that may even have indirect contact with them, e.g. by wiping the eye area with your hand. If, despite this, the swelling of the eyelid does not pass, it also affects the other eyelid, there are accompanying diseases or other symptoms appear, such as eyelid suppuration, pain, severe itching, visual disturbances, you should visit your GP who will be able to thoroughly examine and diagnose or redirect to the appropriate specialist.

In the case of contact reaction to an allergen despite using it in the area of both eyelids, only one of them may be swollen – it is possible that the swollen eyelid has been in contact with the allergen for a long time or more has been used.

The most common non-allergic disease that may also include eyelid edema is conjunctivitis, which is the thin film that covers the eyeball. The most characteristic symptoms are eye redness, itching, purulent discharge and tearing. Conjunctivitis should not cause visual disturbances.

The most common cause is bacterial or viral infection. As it can be contagious, it is important to follow good hygiene practices to prevent reinfection or infecting another person. Do not touch your eyes with your hands, wash your hands frequently, use a clean towel around your face every day, do not share a towel or eye cosmetics with others, change pillowcases frequently and throw away eye cosmetics, e.g. mascara.

If you want to relieve puffiness, you can try a natural eye cream that not only minimizes visible puffiness, but also moisturizes and smoothes the skin under the eyes.

If you notice any disturbing symptoms that may indicate eye diseases, it is worth consulting a specialist. At Medonet Market, you can already buy an ophthalmologist appointment, which will be performed at the Eyemed specialist ophthalmology clinic.
