“What if? ..” How to stop winding yourself up

Do you often say to yourself: “What if?”, “What if it doesn’t …”, “Maybe it’s still not worth it”? If yes, perhaps it’s time to get rid of the habit of constantly winding yourself up for no reason.

Psychologists have long been interested in the problem of “self-winding”. It is characteristic of anxious people or those who are in a state of depression. These are thoughts caused by events in life, looking ahead, repeating. They “run in circles” and never lead to the finish line.

Unlike consciously thinking about a problem in order to find a solution, there is never a clear end. These obsessive thoughts are always with us, even if they are somewhere in the background, behind our conscious and arbitrary thoughts. They take up space in our heads and consume our mental energy to no avail.

Sometimes they express the temperament of a person, the properties of his character, anxiety and a pessimistic view of things. This is manifested both in mental stress and in physical stress – restlessness, the habit of swinging the leg, pulling objects, nibbling or chewing something. In this case, you can try meditation.

You have to learn to keep your mind in the present moment.

You can learn special exercises that must be performed daily, like brushing your teeth and other morning hygiene procedures. They help us focus and keep our consciousness on the current moment: we focus on breathing, on bodily sensations, on the sounds that surround us.

Gradually, step by step, this will help muffle the indistinct mumbling of our soul, relieve stress and put things in order in our head.

This is not as easy as it might seem at first glance, which is why it needs to be learned. Find out what classes, such as yoga or meditation, are taking place near your home or place of work. And for starters and inspiration, read one of the best books on the practice of meditation – John Kabat-Zinn “Wherever you go – you’re already there.”
