Church holidays
On July 24, there are many memorable dates in the calendar of the Orthodox Church. Before or after the service in the temple, you can read about the holiday in order to better understand the meaning of faith. Often, during a sermon, priests send parishioners to some religiously important event or holiday. Let’s talk about them.
St. Olga’s Day
Princess Olga was the first ruler of Our Country who consciously accepted Christianity. And although all the people were baptized half a century after her reign, Prince Vladimir, the grandson of the princess, Saint Olga was also recognized as equal to the apostles. That is, the Church recognizes her merits in the religious field, as well as the deeds of the apostles.
Commemoration of the Miracle of Saint Euphemia
The Great Martyr is revered by Orthodox and Catholics. She died under the emperor Diocletian, known for his persecution of the faith. However, she showed her miracle almost 150 years later, when representatives of the Church gathered in Chalcedon – now it is Turkey. An important theological dispute was being resolved: Christ has only a divine nature or also a human one. The cathedral was held at the relics of Euphemia. When the debate reached an impasse, both sides decided to trust the Holy Spirit through Euphemia. They laid two scrolls with their theses on the relics. They opened the shrine three days later and saw how Euphemia was holding out one scroll, and the second lay at her feet. As a result, the dogma was affirmed that Christ is the God-Man.
Uncovering the relics of Hilarion (Trinity)
The archbishop lived in a difficult time for the Church – the establishment of Soviet power. In those years, there were also strife within the denomination. The holy martyr defended the dogmas of faith in disputes, created theological works, preached and tried to unite the brothers in Christ. He was exiled to Solovki, was in prison, was forced to walk many miles along the stage. He died in Leningrad in 1929. In 1998, the uncovering of the relics of the archbishop took place. They are kept in the Sretensky Monastery in Moscow in the Church of the Resurrection of Christ and the New Martyrs and Confessors of Our Country.
Memory of Kindey Sidsky
The martyr served as a presbyter in Pamphylia, modern southern Turkey. He lived in the III-IV centuries AD. He was sentenced to death by burning. At that time, the emperor Diocletian ruled, who did not favor Christians. The presbyter was led to the place of death. On the way, the soldiers met a woodcutter and took a pile of firewood from him to make a fire. Presbyter Kindei paid for the firewood, put it on his shoulders and steadfastly carried it. Dying at the stake, he did not stop preaching. According to legend, a pagan priest saw this and was so imbued with the strength of the spirit of the presbyter that he himself converted to Christianity.
Veneration of the icons of the Mother of God
On July 24, among Church holidays, the following images of the Mother of God are also venerated:
- Borkolabovskaya Icon of the Mother of God. The icon was found in 1659 in the Borkolabovsk convent in the Mogilev region (Belarus).
- Icon of the Mother of God Rudnenskaya Ratkovskaya. The origin of the image is unknown.
- Icon of the Mother of God Okovetskaya (Rzhevskaya). In 1539, monk Stefan acquired this image among the dense forest on the banks of the Vyryshnya River, which depicts the Mother of God with the Child and Nicholas the Wonderworker.
