I’d like to start drinking more herbal infusions. However, I do not know what the individual herbs work. Could I have a few words about basic herbs like mint, chamomile or sage?

There are several basic herbs that each of us should have in our natural medicine cabinet and take on an ad hoc basis or continuously. What do you need to enter on such a list?

Chamomile

In Poland, you can find chamomile in meadows and wastelands, it is also cultivated. A valued component of chamomile is essential oil, which includes (-) – α-bisabolol and A, B and C bisabolol oxides, as well as farnesene, myrcene, cadinene and matrix. Moreover, its flowers contain flavone derivatives, i.e. apigenin and apigenin-7-glucoside. Chamomile is used especially to treat ailments gastric – intestinal, especially flatulence, belching, inflammation of the digestive system. id = »h20 ″ id =» h23 ″ id = »h26 ″ id =» h27 ″> Research has shown that the components of chamomile extract have anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, antibacterial and antiviral properties.

Chamomile and extracts obtained from it may also have antipruritic and antidepressant effects. The available research results for (-) – α-bisabolol show that this compound as the main component of the chamomile flower is non-toxic and does not show teratogenic effects. However, it turned out that taking chamomile and warfarin (an organic chemical compound, a coumarin derivative, is a vitamin K antagonist) may increase the risk of hemorrhage. There is also an interaction of chamomile with components of hormone replacement therapy by competing for estrogen receptors. Adverse reactions can be expected when taking large amounts of chamomile extracts during contraceptive therapy.

Pepper mint

The mint leaves contain essential oil, tannins, phenolic acids (rosemary, chlorogenic), tritermenes, carotenoids, flavonoids. Thanks to such a rich composition, infusions and alcoholic extracts of peppermint are used in digestive disorders, anorexia, flatulence, nausea, gastroenteritis, gastrointestinal cramps, and as an aid in the course of gallstones, viral hepatitis, and interestingly – to the prevention of motion sickness. However, you should be careful in case of hyperacidity, because mint may increase the discomfort associated with it.

Peppermint oil stimulates the stomach and liver to function, facilitates digestion, and also has an analgesic, antiseptic and diastolic effect.

Medicinal sage

Sage is highly promoted and widely used. Its leaves, apart from essential oil, contain many other biologically active compounds, incl. tannins, saponins. Valued ingredients of sage are carnosol and carnosic acid, which have an antioxidant effect. Sage tea has an effect antibacterial, antiviral, antiallergic, antiviral, analgesic. id = »h20 ″ id =» h23 ″ id = »h26 ″ id =» h27 ″> It also protects against cancer, atherosclerosis and diabetes.

Sage is not recommended during feeding and lactation, taking anticoagulants, and in the case of acute gastritis, epilepsy and estrogen-stimulated cancer. High doses administered orally for a long time may cause nausea, vomiting and dementia.

Field horsetail

The field horsetail is well known practically all over Europe. It is a great source of polyphenols, saponins, minerals, organic acids and plant sterols. The most frequently mentioned advantage of field horsetail is its silicon content, thanks to which sage has a positive effect on the appearance of hair, skin and nails and maintains the elasticity of blood vessels. The multitude of antioxidants in horsetail helps the body fight free radicals.

Field horsetail is a source of anti-vitamin B1, its long-term consumption may lead to vitamin B1 (thiamine) deficiency. During the treatment, it is necessary to supplement with thiamine at the same time.

Common nettle

Nettle is known especially as a remedy for swelling and disorders of the urinary system, but its properties, due to its rich composition, are much wider. For medicinal purposes, the leaves are used before flowering. They are rich in chlorophyll, xanthophyll, carotene, tannins, vitamins C, K and B2, pantothenic acid as well as tannins and flavonoids (kaempferol, quercetin, rutin, isoramnetin). In addition to the above-mentioned compounds, also volatile components (2-methylheptanone), organic acids and significant amounts of minerals (mainly calcium, magnesium, iron, silicon) were identified. Nettle leaf infusions are used to treat urinary tract diseases, reduce allergy-related ailments, reduce inflammation, lower cholesterol, urea and blood pressure.

Common nettle can be successfully used as a natural and safe medicine for many diseases. This plant is safe and has no toxic effect on cells.
