Good news from one of London’s hospitals. A study was conducted there which showed that the most serious symptoms in PIMS disappear within six months after hospitalization. PIMS, or pocovid syndrome, is a rare but serious disease that occurs in children after contracting the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
- The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health presents the conclusions of a six-month study involving 46 children with PIMS
- The remnants of the disease are the fatigue and mental problems of children after contracting COVID-19
- However, there is cause for cautious optimism, as many of the most serious effects seem to wear off within six months, concludes study co-author Dr. Justin Penner.

The first cases of PIMS were observed and described as a new disease in Great Britain in April 2020, in Poland the first cases were diagnosed one month later. Doctors are just getting to know the entire spectrum of the disease – including its long-term effects and complications. Therefore, each test gives invaluable knowledge, because hard data can show what is characteristic of PIMS, what are the complications and, of course, how to treat it. «It is too early for us to say anything about, inter alia, the neuropsychological effects of the disease »says Dr. Bernhard Wiedermann, an infectious disease specialist at Children’s National Research Institute in Washington, on the CNN Health website. “But most kids do pretty well,” she adds.
A study at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital
Similar conclusions are confirmed by a recent study published in the journal “The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health”, which looked at the six-month results 46 childrentreated for PIMS.
PIMS-TS is pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2 and is manifested, among others, by serious inflammation, gastric and neurological problems, as well as cardiological problems. The study showed that six months after discharge from the hospital, most of the children studied had resolved their symptoms.
- COVID-19 in children – what are the symptoms and when is it dangerous? [WE EXPLAIN]
Out of the group of children observed at that time, only some of the symptoms persisted – six children still had stomach problems, two had cardiovascular problems, and one child had systemic inflammation. Eighteen children continued to suffer from minor neurological abnormalities, but this did not affect their ability to carry out daily activities.

The impact of COVID-19 on the development and psyche of children
The motor skills of children who underwent COVID-19 were also assessed. Eighteen of the respondents were on the lower rating scale. The authors of the study recall, however, that they did not have a comparison group of healthy patients, so there is no evidence as to whether this is related to PIMS or is based on statistics. Previous research has shown that the pandemic has delayed the development of some children.
Importantly, some young patients will require further treatment, but for mental health reasons. Understandably, the pandemic situation and the serious illness of the child could have caused fears as well as family traumas.
The researchers emphasize the importance of continued monitoring of children by parents and doctors – some patients still have learning difficulties due to chronic fatigue.

PIMS. Researchers’ cautious optimism
“We hope these findings may signal cautious optimism, as many of the most serious effects of PIMS-TS appear to subside within six months,” concluded study co-author Dr. Justin Penner. First of all, she draws attention to the fact that medics of various specializations continue to urgently control the effects on mental health or check how fatigue persists in young patients.
PIMS, despite relatively favorable conclusions from the London study, is a very dangerous disease. Doctors would like to remind you that, as children cannot get vaccinated yet, the only form of protection for them at this point is to vaccinate adults.
