Brought it from the store – put it in the refrigerator. We are ready to put almost any food there, firmly believing that it will stay fresh longer in the cool.
Many have bread and canned food, coffee and chocolate, honey and olive oil on the shelves next to meat and milk.
But if additional cooling does not harm some products at least, then there are those that deteriorate after such storage, lose their taste and texture. Therefore, right now open your refrigerator and get out of it …
Raw potatoes
He loves the coolness of dark rooms, but not cold. Because of this, the starch contained in the potatoes will begin to break down, and it will be unpleasant to eat it – the texture will become too coarse. In addition, the taste will be affected by the sugar, which turns into starch after the breakdown.
Bow
It will deteriorate faster on a refrigerator shelf than on a store counter. The bulb will begin to mold and rot from the inside, but from the outside you will not even notice it. It can also convey its taste and smell to other products.
However, if you have already peeled the onion and even chopped it, then you can put it in the refrigerator. Only it should be stored in an airtight bag in a vegetable drawer.
Garlic
When stored in the refrigerator, it loses all the sharpness of its taste. To preserve it, store the heads of garlic in a cool, ventilated dry container, or better yet, in a paper bag. By the way, if the head is already divided into teeth, they must be used within 10 days, otherwise they will start to deteriorate.
Honey
In the refrigerator, it crystallizes and becomes solid. It is extremely difficult to use it until it gets warm. It should be stored at room temperature away from sunlight. However, if you did not know this and have already put the jar in the refrigerator, just put it in a bowl of warm water, and the honey will quickly return to its previous state.
Bread
It can be found on the refrigerator shelf of every third housewife. Like, we don’t eat it so often, but there it doesn’t dry out. Let’s disappoint: this is a myth. The cold dries out the bread, and it will no longer have any taste, even if it becomes soft after heating. But! You can freeze bread. It will then make great toasts.
Nuts
On the one hand, keeping them in the refrigerator will really lengthen their life. But at the same time they will lose their taste, and at the same time they will absorb the smells of neighbors on the shelf. Therefore, it is best to store nuts in an airtight container at room temperature. And to return the taste to those that you have already cooled, heat them up and fry them a little in a dry frying pan.
Tomatoes
Do you want your tomatoes to become loose, lose their firmness, and their pulp begins to resemble porridge? Then put them in the refrigerator. If you want to keep them fresh, store them at room temperature. Remember, in the store they are not in the cold sections? Unripe tomatoes can be laid out on the windowsill, ripe tomatoes can be removed to a dark, dry, cool place.
Spicy sauce
Due to the large amount of vinegar, which absorbs bacteria, it does not need refrigeration, even when open, so as not to deteriorate. But at the same time, as in the case of garlic, the cold will partially absorb the taste of hot pepper. And without it, what kind of hot sauce is it?
Chocolate Nut Butter
It will turn to stone in the refrigerator. Or, if you want, just in a chocolate bar with nuts, only in a jar. Therefore, you should not put it there in any case, if then you do not want to wait for two hours when it will be possible to spread it on toast. An open can is safely stored on the shelf for about a month.
Apples
And pears at the same time. The refrigerator will kill their characteristic crispy texture. Again, in the store they are not stored in cold display cases, which means that they do not really need cold. You can, of course, chill the apple if you are going to eat it right away. But keeping it there for a long time is not worth it.
Tropical fruits
And at the same time persimmon. All of them very poorly tolerate low temperatures, begin to deteriorate and rot. If there is no other way out, then put unripe fruits in the refrigerator. Still, these fruits are best kept at room temperature and eaten as soon as possible after purchase. Let’s clarify again – we are talking about long-term storage. From the fact that you put the fruit in the refrigerator for 2-3 hours, nothing will happen to it.
bananas
Let’s talk about them separately, because a bunch of bananas is found in almost every family refrigerator. But there they quickly become covered with dark spots, darken and become tasteless. The optimum temperature for storing them is +12 degrees.
And to keep them longer, you need to wrap the legs with foil or cling film. Then the specks on the bananas will not appear so soon.
Melon
Yes, from the refrigerator on a hot August day, it tastes perfectly delicious. However, like a watermelon. And after cutting, they can be kept there for three to four days. But the melon should wait for this very cutting at room temperature. Otherwise, it will lose all its beneficial properties, besides the cold will make the flesh loose. The only exception when the fruit can be placed in the fruit compartment is if it is too ripe. In this case, it must be wrapped in cloth or paper.
By the way
There are some rather unusual ways to keep food fresh for longer. For example:
it is advised to grease cheese with butter so that mold does not encroach on it;
lemons need to be cut into four parts, sprinkled with salt and covered with water;
put a celery stalk in a bag with bread – then it will not get stale and moldy;
it is better to freeze tomato sauce in ice cube trays;
eggs can also be frozen by separating the whites and yolks and pouring them into muffin tins;
broccoli and cauliflower last longer if wrapped in a damp towel.
