On vacation, we may encounter various unforeseen health situations, so a first aid kit should be included in the luggage. What medications should we take with us? We asked Bartosz Fiałek for advice. The doctor pays attention to the most important rule. He also explains where to look for help when we feel bad on vacation or an accident occurs.

  1. The doctor reminds you to take the medications that you take permanently with you on vacation
  2. It is also worth remembering, among others about antipyretic / analgesic / anti-inflammatory preparations, patches for small cuts, ointments to soothe insect bites
  3. If we spend holidays in the country, taking anti-diarrheal drugs with us is not necessary – taking them in case of poisoning can even be harmful. Dr. Fiałek explains why

As for the holiday first aid kit – the most important rule: take your medication with you

Holidays are a carefree time, but also a time when you especially have to take into account unforeseen health situations. That is why the first aid kit is an absolute “must have” in a vacationer’s luggage. Some people want to be prepared for anything and pack whatever they can into it. There are still those who do not think about it at all and do not take any holiday medications.

Neither of these extreme situations is good. What’s the golden mean? What should be in the holiday first aid kit, and what medications can you give up? Of course, a lot depends on where we are going, but it is worth remembering the general rules. Bartosz Fiałek, a physician specialist in the field of rheumatology and promoter of medical knowledge, told Medonet about the most important.

  1. Can you deal with emergencies? Check before you start your vacation! QUIZ

– The most important thing is to take the drugs that we take on a permanent basis with us – he emphasizes. – If we suffer from insulin-dependent diabetes – take insulin on vacation, in case of hypertension – medications lowering blood pressure. We often meet people who forget about it. Then such patients go to the doctor in the place of vacation and ask for the prescription of drugs, without having any documentation confirming their widespread use. In such a situation, we, doctors, have no reason to issue a prescription for these drugs, especially when they are specialized drugs. – warns the medic.

What other medications to take on vacation, what can you do without? The doctor reminds me

Bartosz Fiałek reminds you to take antipyretic / analgesic / anti-inflammatory preparations next to your chronic medications. – It often happens that as a result of environmental changes and acclimatization, we can just have a headache. Most often it is not a medical condition and we can deal with it ourselves with the help of these medications.

Of course, patches for minor cuts, insect bite ointments, and if we have allergic symptoms, antihistamines will also be useful. Dr. Fiałek reminds that when we change the environment, allergic symptoms may worsen – as a result of the presence of a given allergen in a given area.

“And it really should be enough,” the doctor says. – In all other cases, such as more serious injuries, the doctor’s help and adherence to his recommendations is already needed.

What about medications for diarrhea? – If we are going to exotic countries, e.g. to Egypt, it is worth taking anti-diarrheal agents and probiotics with us, because different bacterial flora and a different diet can actually result in gastrointestinal problems – reminds Dr. Fiałek. However, in the case of holidays spent in the country, in his opinion, this is not necessary. – If severe diarrhea occurs, it will probably have an infectious background caused by poisoning, and then the administration of anti-diarrheal agents may even harm, because the excretion of the toxic factor from the body will be interrupted – he explains, emphasizing that in such situations you need to see a doctor.

Holiday accidents. When at HED, when for Christmas health care?

You also need to know where to look for help when you have any health complications on holiday. When to go to SOR and when to go to Christmas health care? The doctor reminds you of the main rules – remember them.

– If we experience a sudden, rapid deterioration in health – we go to the Emergency Room or call an ambulance. We do this, among others in case of severe injuries, chest pain, shortness of breath, swelling of one limb, hemoptysis, neurological problems (weakness of the limbs on one side of the body, drooping corner of the mouth, speech disorders, dizziness) – explains Bartosz Fiałek.

Lighter symptoms that bother us and which we are unable to cope with on our own are an indication for a visit to the night clinic and holiday health care.
