What can a vaginal stinging indicate?
Good morning, I am 40 years old and has been bothering me for some time stinging in the vagina. Stinging sometimes occurs when urinating, but it is not the pain that usually accompanies cystitis. This is something new for me because I have never had such symptoms before. A recent check-up with the gynecologist showed that everything was fine, but that was a few months ago. Should I go back to the gynecologist to check if something has changed? What does vaginal stinging mean? Could this be a symptom of some more serious disease? Does this mean there is a bacterial infection?
Or is it a sign of menopause? I have no idea what it could be anymore and I’m clinging to every possibility. The stinging in the vagina is very troublesome and it just bothers me. Sometimes it even appears when I sit or change positions in the chair. I have a sedentary job and it is very painful. I cannot afford any discharge at the moment so I hope it will not be necessary. I can manage somehow at work, but I would like to know if such vaginal stinging is nothing serious. Maybe ordinary vaginal globules available at a pharmacy without a prescription are enough? Please help.
The doctor explains the reasons for the stinging in the vagina
The causes of vaginal pain there may be many, it should be clarified: does the feeling of pricking in the vagina also occur during intercourse? Is sexual intercourse secured? Does the stinging occur during menstruation or regardless of the phase of the cycle? Is standing or sitting more painful? Were you pregnant, did you give birth by caesarean section or by force of nature?
Depending on your answers to these questions, the possible causes of vaginal pain are different, so visit your doctor and tell him more about your symptoms. The gynecologist will also be able to carefully examine the external genitalia, can see the appearance of the vagina using a speculum and examine the remaining organs: the uterus and ovaries in a two-handed examination, combined or by Vaginal ultrasound.
Genital prolapse may be among the causes, especially if you have given birth before. In this case, the pain is caused by damage to the ligament apparatus and pelvic floor muscles that support the reproductive organs in the pelvis.
Other possible causes include skin conditions, which can also affect the vaginal opening causing pain. One of them is lichen sclerosus. If the pains occur cyclically during menstruation, the cause may be endometriosis, although it is not a typical symptom of this disease entity.
Pain, although felt in the vagina, does not necessarily have a beginning in it. It can project from other organs of the pelvis and the abdominal cavity – from the urinary and digestive systems. Examples of disease entities that may project pain in the vaginal area are abdominal hernias or nephrolithiasis.
In addition to pain, the main symptoms of bacterial vaginosis are watery vaginal discharge with a grayish color, an unpleasant odor that can be assessed as “fishy”. The smell is stronger after intercourse or during menstrual bleeding.
Due to the multitude of reasons that may cause the feeling of stinging in the vagina, a doctor’s appointment is recommended. The doctor will be able to answer all your tiresome questions, prescribe medications if you require it, order additional tests or refer you to another specialist.
