What can belly flushing mean in an infant? Is it related to a bad body position during feeding? Should a change be made to the mother’s diet? The question is answered by the drug. Anna Mitschke.

What does overflow in the abdomen mean in an infant?

Hello. Two months ago, I gave birth to a healthy baby girl. Everything would be fine if it weren’t for the problems with her tummy that appeared three days ago. Mostly we have overflow problem in the stomach after eating (breastfeeding) and very painful gases. My daughter gets tired before she gasses out, strains, turns red on her face and cries terribly. Such crying may last up to two hours. Only when she lets go of the “fart” she becomes calm.

But I am very concerned that after each feeding, my daughter shows this splashing in the belly (this was not the case before). I do my best to make my daughter burst after feeding, even after 15 – 20 minutes of walking in a vertical position, it may rebound, but despite this, the overflow appears anyway. I don’t know what could be causing the baby’s belly to overflow. Could this be due to a bad feeding position? Or maybe I should pay attention to my diet, maybe something is harmful to it?

We have an appointment with the pediatrician in two days. I am very concerned about this spilling in my stomach. Maybe I should get her some tests done first? Or give me some medicine. Please give me feedback. Thank you in advance.

The doctor explains why the overflow in the baby’s belly results

The symptoms that you present in your child may indicate intestinal colic. Intestinal colic occurs when there is a characteristic set of symptoms in a child between 3 weeks and 5 months of age. Paroxysmal crying or screaming lasts a total of at least 3 hours a day, it occurs at least 3 times a week. It is accompanied by tightening of the torso, pulling the legs towards the abdomen, flatulence, a greater amount of gas excreted.

It appears during feeding, after feeding or while the baby is asleep. The child develops properly, eats and gains body weight willingly. Intestinal colic can be caused by excessive gas in the intestines, swallowing excessive amounts of air during breastfeeding, dietary errors of the mother, immaturity of the child’s digestive tract, immaturity of the central nervous system in the child, incorrect breastfeeding technique, intolerance or food allergy in the child.

In the case of the occurrence of intestinal colic in the case of a child, you can gently massage the belly, and then place the child, for example, on the mother’s or father’s belly and perform a gentle back massage.

There are a few important things to keep in mind when preventing colic in your baby. The baby should be fed in a calm atmosphere. If possible, make sure that the baby does not swallow too much air while feeding. A nursing mother may limit legumes, onions, cabbage, carbonated drinks in her diet. Your baby may have an intolerance to cow’s milk protein. In this case, it is necessary for the mother to eliminate milk and dairy products, as well as veal and beef meat from the diet.

An examination of the child is essential for a correct diagnosis. It is important to know about the child’s development rate, bowel movements and weight gain. Therefore, please take your child to the pediatrician. The doctor will decide on the need to initiate possible diagnostics or referral to a specialist, e.g. a pediatric gastroenterologist.
