What may the white coating on the tonsils indicate? Does this symptom indicate an untreated infection or its onset? Which specialist should you go to? Are there any home remedies that can help get rid of white plaque on the tongue? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.

Why does a white coating appear on the tonsils?

Hello, I would like to ask you what it shows white coating on the tonsils? This is quite an important question for me, because so far the white coating on my tonsils has only appeared on the occasion of strep throat. But then I also had other symptoms – apart from the white raid on the tonsils, there was also pain and fever. For two weeks, however, I have noticed something completely different about myself. There is a white coating on the tonsils, but apart from that, there is nothing really wrong with me, except maybe a minimal discomfort when swallowing.

I don’t know what could be anymore the cause of white raid on the tonsils – is it some kind of infection or an untreated disease? I do not even know whether to go to the family doctor with it, or if such a white raid on the tonsils without any other symptoms is a matter for the ENT specialist. I do not want to pay for the visit unnecessarily, because maybe it is really a minimal problem and there are some home remedies for white coating on the tonsilswhich can i use? Or some medications for such ailments? It’s hard to call it a problem, because the white coating on the tonsils is not a problem for me at all, but I’m a bit worried that this is a symptom of some serious problems.

The doctor indicates possible causes of white raid on the tonsils

One of the most common the causes of a raid on the tonsils there is angina or acute pharyngitis and tonsillitis. In adults, it is more often caused by viruses (90-95% of cases), but it can also be caused by a bacterial infection (5-10% of cases). Streptococcus pyogenes is the most common factor causing angina in children, and Fusobacterium necrophorum in adults. The course of acute pharyngitis and tonsillitis may be different depending on the etiological factor, viruses causing ulceration on the oral mucosa are e.g. herpes labialis (HSV-1) or enteroviruses.

The unit with which angina should always be differentiated is infectious mononucleosis. It is caused by EBV virus. The main symptom is tiredness and other flu-like symptoms that develop gradually. In addition, you can observe the image of the throat as during streptococcal angina, enlargement of the lymph nodes as well as the liver and spleen. Laboratory tests show high levels of liver markers (ASPAT, ALAT). The typical form of mononucleosis is more often seen in children and the atypical one in adults.

Oropharyngeal candidiasis is another entity that may appear as a white coating on the tonsils. Most often it affects infants, adults wearing prostheses or using antibiotics, during chemotherapy, radiotherapy of the head and neck area, and adults with autoimmune deficiencies, eg as a result of AIDS. People who use inhaled steroids for asthma are also at higher risk of developing oropharyngeal candidiasis.

It is very important to see your GP with white coating on the tonsils. Perhaps it is just viral pharyngitis that will pass without treatment, or streptococcal angina that requires antibiotic treatment. It can also be a symptom of comorbidities that have not been identified so far. The doctor will be able to collect a detailed interview and examine not only the oral cavity, but also the lymph nodes, chest and abdominal organs. He may also order additional laboratory or imaging tests and prescribe treatment.
