What might a sweet taste indicate? Is the sweet aftertaste in the mouth a symptom of any disease? Is it a symptom of diabetes mellitus? Is this a cause for concern? Are these symptoms worth consulting with a doctor? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.
What does the sweet taste in the mouth indicate?
Good day. I would like to ask what it shows a sweet aftertaste in the mouthI’ve been feeling for a while. I do not know if this is a cause for concern, as the problem appeared quite recently. At first, I ignored the feeling of sweet taste in my mouth, because I thought it might be the effect of diet, etc. Recently, however, I changed my eating habits and I gave up sweets and sweetening, for example, coffee or tea. But that hasn’t changed the situation completely, and I still have feelings a sweet aftertaste in the mouth.
This usually happens several times a week, but I did not notice any correlation with what I ate that day. Can a sweet taste in the mouth be a symptom of any disease? Could such a sweet taste in the mouth be related to diabetes? I have never had such problems, but I haven’t done any tests for a long time, so I started to get a little stressed with this problem. On the other hand, I don’t know if I’m exaggerating, because maybe the feeling of a sweet taste in my mouth is not dangerous at all. I would be grateful for all the tips and advice, is the sweet taste in my mouth a cause for concern and a visit to the doctor?
The doctor explains the reasons for the sweet aftertaste in the mouth
Presence of a sweet aftertaste in the mouthrelated to food is a very rare symptom. It can occur in such disease states as:
- metabolic diseases – diabetes, ketoacidosis, disorders of the thyroid gland.
- neurological diseases – stroke, epilepsy. A sweet taste in the mouth can be an early symptom of neurological diseases
- ENT disorders in the olfactory organ – can also affect the altered perception of taste by altered perception of smell. This is how viral diseases, sinusitis, oropharyngitis and rhinitis can manifest themselves. Certain bacteria, especially those of the Pseudomonas family, can cause a sweet aftertaste in the mouth.
- gastroesophageal reflux – gastric acids due to the weakening of the lower esophageal sphincter are thrown into the esophagus and the oropharynx, resulting in a sweet taste in the mouth.
- small cell lung cancer – an unpleasant, sweet taste in the mouth in patients with small cell lung cancer may be caused by the paraneoplasmic syndrome, which is SIADH, i.e. a syndrome of inadequate vasopressin secretion. This syndrome causes hyponatraemia, which can cause a sweet taste in the mouth.
If a sweet taste in the mouth is rare, occasionally, it is likely to disappear on its own over time. However, if the symptom appears regularly or with increasing frequency, see a doctor, preferably a primary care physician. He will be able to get a detailed history of the sweet aftertaste in the mouth, digestion time, from what time and under what circumstances, and whether it is accompanied by other symptoms.

The doctor will also be able to conduct a detailed interview regarding acquired and chronic diseases, hospitalizations and operations, medications taken, and family medical history. He will be able to perform a thorough physical examination and may order additional laboratory, microbiological or radiological tests if he deems it appropriate. Also, a family doctor will be able to order consultations with a doctor of a different specialization, depending on the history and presented deviations in the physical examination, an ENT specialist, an endocrinologist or a neurologist.
