The surgeon may have many specialties, but in each case his or her task is to treat a given disease by surgery. The surgeon must demonstrate not only high medical knowledge, but also resistance to stress and manual skills. What are the surgical specialties? What does a general surgeon do and what does a vascular surgeon do?

General surgeon

A general surgeon performs surgeries on the abdominal organs, such as: thyroidectomy, appendectomy, hernia removal, burn treatment, varicose veins treatment, and gallbladder removal. Such operations are performed under general anesthesia. The tasks of the general surgeon include pre-operative preparation, operation, and then post-operative management.

We can also go to a general surgeon when there is a need for a minor surgery, such as incision of an abscess, removal of skin lesions or suturing wounds. Such procedures are performed under local anesthesia.

Vascular surgeon

A vascular surgeon specializes in diseases of blood vessels and lymph vessels. We will go to the vascular surgeon when it is necessary to perform a Doppler ultrasound – an ultrasound examination of the arteries and veins. The tasks of a vascular surgeon include performing endovascular surgery and surgery on open tissues.

Cardiovascular surgeon

A separate specialization is cardiovascular surgery, also known as cardiac surgery, which deals with operations of the heart and blood vessels. A surgeon with this specialization deals with such procedures as, for example, by-pass implantation, aortic aneurysm surgery, or replacement of heart valves, heart transplantation, implantation of pacemakers.

surgeon oncologist

A surgeon with a specialization in oncology deals with cancer operations. His tasks include not only carrying out the operation itself, but also qualifying the patient for it.

Maxillofacial surgeon

As the name suggests, the maxillofacial surgeon deals with operations in the area of the mouth, face and neck. Such a surgeon treats congenital defects, but also deals with extensive pre-cancer diagnostics and operations after mechanical injuries – for example after an accident. It is worth emphasizing that plastic surgery is a separate specialization here.

Dental surgery is related in part to maxillofacial surgery.

cosmetic surgery

The task of a plastic surgeon is to reconstruct congenital and traumatic defects. We can turn to him after severe burns, when it is necessary to perform a skin transplant, as well as to reconstruct organs after transplantation.

neurosurgery

A neurosurgeon deals with operations and treatment of the nervous system. In this specialization, the surgeon performs brain operations and performs procedures in the area of the central and peripheral nervous system.

Orthopedic surgeon

An orthopedic surgeon deals with the treatment of congenital and acquired musculoskeletal defects. It has both a skeletal and muscular system, as well as vessels and nerves that connect closely to them.

Closely related to orthopedics is trauma surgery, also known as traumatology. A surgeon with this specialization performs operations on bones, ligaments, muscles, joints, and tendons.
