How long can a runny nose associated with an infection last? What is neisseria spp found in a smear? Is neisseria spp the bacterium responsible for the development of the infection? Can it cause more serious health conditions? The question is answered by the drug. Anna Mitschke.
What is the presence of neisseria spp?
Good day. For several weeks I have had a health problem with my son (3 years old). From the time he was 14 months old, he started going to nursery, then he moved to kindergarten (2,5 years). During this time, he was sick very often, he had various types of infections. But recently we can’t get rid of his runny nose at all. After using many nasal drops, aerosols and continuous inhalations, there was still no improvement and there is no improvement. I decided to swab my son’s nose and throat.
The pediatrician said that there was no such need because the son’s runny nose was not purulent but infectious. But how many weeks can it take infectious runny nose? So I did a swab on my own. Today I received the results and it says that my son has many presence of Neisseria spp in the throat and nose. What does it mean? Is Neisseria spp the bacterium that is responsible for the son’s constant runny nose? Could late diagnosis cause any serious diseases? How to treat it, should the son take an antibiotic as soon as possible?
I am very afraid for my son’s health. Every piece of information will be important to me. Please help.
The doctor explains the risk of the presence of neisseria spp
Neiserria spp. Belongs to the physiological bacterial flora of the pharynx. Therefore, her presence should not be alarming. The bacteria present there are a natural defense barrier against pathogenic microorganisms. We very often observe an increase in the susceptibility to infections in children who started attending nurseries and kindergartens. Large groups of people predispose children to easily infect each other.
In most cases of upper respiratory tract infections in children, viruses are the cause. Among the viruses that cause infections of the upper respiratory tract, we can distinguish, among others, adenoviruses, Epstein and Barr viruses causing infectious mononucleosis, Coxsackie viruses, rhinoviruses, coronaviruses, influenza A and B viruses, parainfluenza, cytomegaloviruses. Bacteria are much less likely to cause upper respiratory tract infections. During the examination, the doctor assesses the likelihood of infection with a bacterial etiology. Based on the history, the presented symptoms and physical examination determine the method of treatment.
This is very important because the decision about implementation of antibiotic therapy should be justified. Excessive use of antibiotics is harmful, it creates resistance. Sometimes such treatment is necessary. It prevents the occurrence of complications, reduces the severity of symptoms and shortens the duration of the disease. Suspected bacterial etiology is an indication for a bacteriological examination or enzyme immunoassay confirming the diagnosis. Symptomatic treatment is sufficient for most viral infections. If your child’s symptoms persist, see a pediatrician.
It happens that viral infections turn into bacterial ones, which require the implementation of antibiotic therapy. Especially when a high fever appears that does not respond to treatment, seizures occur, the child refuses to eat, we notice breathing problems, the child is excessively sleepy or there is difficult contact with him, you should urgently see a doctor.
