PSYchology

Every month, Jungian analyst Stanislav Raevsky deciphers the pictures you saw in your dreams.

Dream of Ariadne, 43 years old

“I look out the window at night, and there the moon is shining — I know that it is the moon, because the sky is dark blue. At the same time, the disk is small, and the rays are very bright and long, like those of the sun. And at first this moon is partially covered from me by the window frame. But I really want to see it, I tilt my head this way and that, move around, and finally I manage to see it completely, and it is so bright that it blinds me. Nothing else happened in this dream. What can this mean?

Interpretation

“In the center of this dream is one symbol: the moon-sun. As if the unconscious is drawing your attention to something important. Speaking metaphorically, he suggests looking at the moon through a telescope. When we see the sun, moon, planets or stars in a dream, we are dealing with something more than our «I». Such a dream reminds us of the eternal. About what the psychologist Carl Gustav Jung called «the self.» He believed that our «I» is deluded, fantasizing that life revolves around it. In fact, «I» revolves around the self, the real sun of our psyche. By the age of forty, many of us feel lost. Jung learned from his own experience that you can get out of this crisis by starting to hear your self. It is in the middle of life that we can look out of the house of our «I» and see the moon-sun of the self.

The sun often symbolizes masculine (paternal) energy. And the moon is female (maternal). Their simultaneous presence or hybrid of the sun and moon signifies the meeting of these energies. Divine alchemical marriage. Window or door — a symbol of the border, transition. It’s like you’re in some sort of transitional state. Perhaps you are locked in a certain problem and you need to get out of this prison and look at the sky to see the eternal moon.

We can understand a lot about our nature by thinking about the moon. The moon is cyclic — it comes and goes, waxes and wanes. It constantly reminds us of change and eternal return and renewal. The fact that everything grows and develops, and that there will be rebirth after death.

The moon also reflects the light of the sun. Which sun do you reflect? One of the deep themes of psychological and spiritual development is to stop identifying with individual reflections and become one who reflects everything that happens.

But we must not forget about the danger of lunar influence. The moon drives us crazy, makes us filled with anxiety. Awakens sexuality, and sometimes provokes depression. The silver light of the moon can take you to the land of false dreams and fantasies. Therefore, thinking about your mental and spiritual development, we must not forget about reality and contacts with other people. This will create a balance between the lunar world of sleep and the solar world of reality. Only reliance on family, friends and loved ones allowed Jung to experience a profound transformation. I would advise you to analyze this dream with a professional psychologist, someone who knows your current situation well.
