What is meant by non-reactive HCV in test results? Is this result a cause for concern? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.
What does non-reactive HCV indicate?
Good morning, my dad is 64 years old, he had gall bladder excision a few months ago. He had a problem with it for a long time and finally the doctors decided to cut the pouch. Dad has been very careful since then, regularly visits the doctor and generally does not complain about his health. Nevertheless, the internist commissioned my dad to do HCV test. On receiving the results, I read that the result is non-reactive and I do not know what that means at all. Which means HCV non-reactive in test results?
I know that HCV virus it is very menacing and dangerous. I don’t know why the doctor gave my dad this test, but seeing the results makes me even more worried. Please let me know what HCV non-reactive in the test results means, because my dad generally doesn’t talk much, and when it comes to his health, it is difficult to get anything out of him. I am worried and afraid that something is wrong with these HCV tests. That is why I am looking for help here and perhaps I will get an answer to the question that bothers me. I am asking for advice.
Your doctor explains what the HCV non-reactive result means
Madam, routinely before surgeries, including cholecystectomy, i.e. removal of the gallbladder (gallbladder is an incorrect term), tests are performed on the presence of anti-HCV antibodies and in some cases for the presence of the HBs antigen (especially in people who have not been vaccinated against hepatitis B). For HCV, a non-reactive result means that the body has not made antibodies to the virus. This means that the patient has never been in contact with the virus, so he was not and is not infected. In turn, a reactive result means the presence of antibodies in the body.
Importantly, this does not mean that we are definitely sick, but that we have had contact with the virus. It happens that the body coped with the virus on its own. In the case of a reactive result, another test for the presence of viral genetic material in the body should be performed. If the result is positive, it means that the patient is infected with HCV.
As for the non-reactive result, there is no need for further testing. It is worth repeating tests for the presence of HCV and HIV from time to time, because the quick detection of the infection and the implementation of appropriate treatment can prevent health and life-threatening consequences. As for cholecystectomy, please remember to pick up the histopathological result of the excised follicle. Unfortunately, it is fortunately rare that a neoplasm develops in an inflamed follicle.
