What does low lymphocyte count in pregnancy indicate? Is low lymphocyte count in pregnancy a cause for concern? What can cause lowered lymphocytes in pregnancy? Does this condition threaten the woman’s health or the course of pregnancy? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.

What does low lymphocyte count in pregnancy indicate?

Good morning, I would like to ask what it means low levels of lymphocytes in pregnancy? I am currently in the fourth week of pregnancy, 32 years old and so far all the tests have been fine. There was nothing wrong with my blood tests, urine tests or ultrasound. Today, however, I received the results of the research from low levels of lymphocytes. I know that norms of lymphocytes in pregnancy they are higher and I have level 15 lymphocytes which made me very worried. Is low lymphocyte count in pregnancy a symptom of any health problems or is it related to the fact that I am pregnant? What could be the cause of low lymphocytes in pregnancy?

I would like to know if I have a reason to worry or if there is some way to explain it meaningfully and I just panic. Of course, I will go to my doctor as soon as possible, but before the visit I would like to know what causes the low level of lymphocytes in pregnancy and whether something is bothering me or threatening to maintain the pregnancy. I would be grateful if I could repeat this test and see if the lymphocyte count is just as low? Or maybe such low lymphocytes in pregnancy are an indication for additional tests? I am asking for a quick reply, because I am very nervous about my health and these results.

The doctor explains the causes of low lymphocytes in pregnancy

During pregnancy, there are many changes in the woman’s body – not only in the growing circumference of the abdomen, but also, inter alia, about the composition of the blood. Any laboratory norms that we see on test results are appropriate for the average woman who is not pregnant. Therefore, you should not compare your results to the standards we see on the sheet, because they may turn out to be inadequate to the state in which we are.

During pregnancy, there is usually an increase in the number of white blood cells or leukocytes (referred to as WBC in morphology). Leukocytosis is caused by the fact that the body of a pregnant woman recognizes a foreign body in our body, which is the fetus, and therefore begins to produce more white blood cells, and neutrophils (a type of white blood cells) survive longer. In turn, the lymphocyte pool decreases in the first and second trimesters and increases in the third trimester. Monocytes, on the other hand, are at their highest level in early pregnancy, and decrease the closer to delivery. Eosinophils and basophils do not decrease significantly throughout pregnancy.

Other hematological changes occurring during pregnancy include an increase in blood volume, even by half – this is our physiological mechanism of preparation for blood loss during childbirth and the need to supply blood to the growing organ which is the uterus (as much as about a liter of blood is in the uterus and maternal bearing parts!). The number of red blood cells (erythrocytes, referred to as RBC in the blood count) also increases, but due to the dilution of the blood there is a relative decrease in hemoglobin of 1-2 g / dL, usually around the end of the second or the beginning of the third trimester. This is a physiological change that occurs during pregnancy and should not be worried about. If your anemia is deeper than allowed, the attending physician or obstetrician will certainly pay attention to it.

I hope that I explained why you should not stress too much when we see when a parameter in the blood count is higher or lower than the recommended range in the norms listed on the sheet and I told you well why the number of lymphocytes in the blood is physiologically reduced in the first trimester.

The editorial board recommends:

  1. What are the evidence of increased lymphocytes in pregnancy?
  2. Can you get pregnant during the infertile days?
  3. I have no strength for anything – is this a symptom of a disease?
