What does a high CRP result show in a child?

Hello, I am a mother of a 3-year-old boy. Recently, he has had a lot of health problems and has been catching infections. Most often, these were symptoms of a cold, but they appeared so often that the doctor ordered a more detailed diagnosis. We did some research in November, but it worried us the most elevated CRP in a child – the CRP 200 result in the child was assessed by the doctor for the result of these infections, which reassured us a bit. After using the medications, the infections passed and my son felt better. After a month, we repeated the test, but the child’s CRP result is again disturbingly high, having risen above 300.

Which means high CRP in a childnow that the infections are over and there are no other symptoms. If the colds have passed, then whether CRP test shouldn’t it be better? Is that high CRP in a child is a symptom of some more serious health problems? Please let me know if it’s elevated CRP result in the child is it a reason for further diagnostics? Maybe there are some others reasons for high CRP at a baby, and we panic unnecessarily? I would be grateful for your explanations as I find contradictory information on the subject CRP standards in children and I don’t know what to do now.

Madam, CRP, or C-reactive protein, is an acute phase protein, so its concentration increases when inflammation develops, so it can be said that the CRP protein is a marker of inflammation. The norm is up to 5 mg / l, higher values indicate ongoing inflammation. CRP protein it is very often used in the diagnosis of infectious diseases. It is assumed that concentrations up to 50 mg / l suggest a viral etiology of infection, values of about 100 mg / l may indicate the presence of parasites, and higher values, in the order of 200-300 mg / l and more, suggest a bacterial etiology.

Of course, the CRP protein is not only used to diagnose infectious diseases. Unfortunately, high CRP levels may suggest the presence of various neoplasms, including hematopoietic malignancies. High CRP values It is also observed in chronic inflammatory conditions, for example rheumatoid arthritis, although the concentration of ESR is more important in this case. In the case of your son, diagnostics should be deepened, especially for bacterial infections, but also chronic inflammations should be ruled out. Unfortunately, children also suffer from rheumatic diseases. It is a pity that you did not write down what diseases your son has recently suffered and whether he is chronically ill. Such information is crucial in further diagnosis.
